Question

Stupid question really I know, but does anyone have a larger pipe into their PC and is it worth the extra cash ?

What typical speeds do you hit when downloading ?
Thinking about upgrading since I can put it through as a business expense.

Hello

Well, you can download faster. If you are downloading lots of games, music, movies and so on you will notice a speed difference.

If you are just generally browsing around the web, there is obviously some but not lots of difference.

If someone else is going to pay for it, I would take the 2mb!

Steve.

Cool

I'd be paying for it in any event since I am the business (contractor)
Sheer greed and speed is the motivational factor since I download a lot and I'm an impatient barsteward

Hello

Well, it depends on where you download from and what you download.

If I use Bit Torrent, I can get 150 kb/s + from a 2mb line. Kazza on the other hand rarely reaches 40 kb/s.

I decided that the extra speed wasn't worth it in the end.

Kazaa is a pain in that respect.
I'm using Direct Connect at the mo since I seem to find more genuine articles than fakes using it.

Depends what you're doing.

I've had 512K ADSL about a month now - previously had 64k ISDN at home. I download a few bits but 50 to 60k/sec is a lovely jump over 7k/sec so to myself I see no point in going faster.

If you're downloading junk 24/7 then maybe...

I have got 2MB ADSL and if you can afford it then get it, DL large files at 200K/Sec rocks.

I get 250kb/s from 2mb telewest. Trouble is you get too used to it and it's hard to go back down. I only said to myself I would get it for a couple of months to see what it is like but I can see myself keeping it.

I have the 512Kb service from Telewest. I have considered upgrading to 2Mb, but for what I use it for (surfing and hosting my own website) I can't really justify the extra money. I do download some MP3's occasionally or the odd Linux distribution every now and again.

I suppose you really need to be using the bandwidth a lot to justify the quicker download speeds or higher throughput.

I would only really upgrade if the upload speeds weren't so cr@ppy.

Unhappy

The isp can easily find out if you have uncapped it. Be it by accessing the modem or through logs on the ubr.

Just a friendly warning if you want to attempt it.

i have been uncapped for nearly 12 months now, the only prob iv ever had is blueyonder upgrading my firmware on my modem to stop me, but its easy enough to downgrade again.
providing you dont go stupid with it and download 24/7 there should be no reason they will even notice, the service you pay for will have a gig limit for 24hours providing you dont cross this you should be fine, check www.cablemodemhack.com for info, if you get stuck post up a msg or mail me and il try helpin out.
