Hi,

My first attempt at networking and I can't seem to get either PC to see the other one - any ideas? Using an 8 port hub and both PC's have the active LAN icon at the bottom of the screen. Anyone know of a good on-line guide or want to hazard a guess at what's wrong. I'm new to all this IP address/administrator nonsense.

All I'm trying to do is copy files across - I might give up and get a USB cable instead though.

Can you ping one machine from the other?

Some things to check/set/try

1. On the XP machine, go to Control Panel > >Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Security Options, scroll down to Network Access - Sharing & Security Model for Local Accounts. Change this to Classic, Local Users Authenticate as Themselves.

2. Make sure users on each machine have password assigned

3. Create a user account on each machine with the username/password of the other machine

4. Both machines must have the same workgroup name, IP addresses in the same range, and the same Subnet Mask. For a home network, use IP address 192.168.0.1 on one and 192.168.0.2 on the other. Subnet 255.255.255.0 on both. Workgroup name can be anything so long as same on both machines

5. Enable File & Printer Sharing on both machines

6. On both - Go to My Computer, right click the drive icon(s) for drive(s) you want to share, choose Sharing/Sharing & Security and enable sharing.

If still not working, you'll need to check cables are correctly wired, that they have standard wiring pattern, (not x-over)

Okay, can't ping either machine from the other.

Checked most of the things you've suggested above except the username/password bit - is this important?

The Win2000 machine can seem to find the other machine in it's network places but when trying to access it comes up with the message 'PC1 not accessiblenetwork. The network path was not found'

Checked the cabling, don't have any xover cables so I presume I need to use the 8 port hub - but not the uplink port?

Kevin,

The username/password or machine names aren't important at this stage. If you have the active connection, that just tells you the PC's are physically connected to the hub correctly.

What are the IP addresses from both the PC's LAN cards?

Go to a command prompt and type ipconfig /all

they should be the same apart from the last number

e.g.

PC 1 - 192.168.10.1 (mask 255.255.255.0)
PC 2 - 192.168.10.2 (mask 255.255.255.0)

It's as per your message - only difference I can see is the in the Windows IP configuration, the Win 2000 machine has broadcast whereas the XP machine says mixed?

Aha, got the ba5tard - it was zonealarm on PC1. Switched it off and it's okay now.

Zone Alarm would block the ping. You can set ZA to prompt you with alerts; do you have this disabled? It would have popped up when you first tried the ping.

Still got the PS1 but a PS has joined the fold (3 laptops and 4 desktops !!)
Struggling now with the XP machine not wanting to adopt the ISDN and Modem PCI cards from the Win 2000 machine.

And now the printer on the Win2000 machine has taken the huff at losing the PCI cards.......

Don't you just love computers.....
