Can anyone think of a reason why I can't run the car while I source a replacement / get this one patched up...

None at all mate, i removed both of mine due to them being unserviceable (cracked badly). Removing them and running the car like it until replacement will have no ill effect.

Or just take them all off and use heatwrap-no further hassle and less loss of heat before the turbo.

I like the idea of the heat wrap. Might actually be the best way of fixing this, as the wrap will probably cost less than a new shield - and the repair will be permamant.

I'm enjoyong a less rattly car now

When you say right hand, I assume you mean drivers side, if so then take note of how close the oil filter is.
