Ive just got my scooby about 4months ago and its done about 119.000miles and the gearbox is making a wining noise in 4th and 5th! wut could it be??? can someone advice me on it.... ive called my bank manager....

 

After its stripped down and looked at it may be the synchros and gears expect to pay £500-£600 or source a second hand box.

Give me a mail with your car details and I'll source some alternative options, though does initially sound like the gears have gone.

 

Hey mate i got a STi Ver4 98 Type R with Fourth gear crunching and first jumping out covered 58000 miles and need some advice. Any advice would be appreciated

 

Sounds like synchros but I ll try some Redline shock proof heavy weight oil first ,it may save u the $$$$$???

I wouldn't have thought synchros would make a whining noise, interesting because 4th and 5th gear are completely seperate. on the main shaft 4th and 5th have different needle bearings so you wouldn't expect only those two to go.

The only thing I could put it down to would be the drive pinion roller bearing or the main shaft ball bearing.
