Turbos on classics
I have just aquired another turbo from a UK car with 32,000 miles on it. When holding the propeller whould there be any play in the movement and if not what does the turbo need to get it to work 100% nice

You should expect to feel a very small amount of lateral play in the bearing (side to side) yes, but no longitudinal (front to back) movement. The oil pressure in the bearing does the job of controlling the lateral float when it's running. Turn the turbo over with your fingers on the impeller nut and, checking from the entry, make sure there's no bend in the compressor end of the shaft.
The other things to check for are damage to the compressor and impeller blades, correct functioning of the wastegate and actuator (and that the c-clip is in good nick), and that all three studs are still in the exhaust mounting flange.
