Question

I hill climb my STI V3 My 97. It is going really well, and is driven there and back from the track about 3000 miles each year.

Does anyone out there think I would benefit in accelleration with an RA box? Is 5th on both boxes the same ratio?

I have found a box from a RA 1996 for £350, is this about right?
Are the final drive ratio's the same for my diff or is that another bit to find?
Will plated front and rear diffs really help?
My car has NO understeer(!)I just need more traction out of bends as it wheelspins now.....

Help!

Graham.

Cool

I don't think a plated front diff will help you unless you hillclimb on gravel. Better off with a helical gear style front diff for tarmac, or, being that you don't feel you have any understeer now, leave the front well enough alone.

5th gear in the set is not the same but you can use the existing gear but makes a big change from 4th to 5th

Is the wheelspin front or rear? Lower ratio's are just going to make wheelspin more of an issue, no?

I did my first hill climb recently - I was appalled at the huge amount of front wheelspin I was getting when nailing throttle after a steep uphill apex. My temporary installed gearbox has the stock open diff - would love to try again once rebuilt gearbox, with Quaife, is refitted

Richard, please keep in touch with your hill climber and that diff.
My STI does exactly the same, mostly front wheel spin from a hard start and tight apex corners.
The starts are very fast though and the wheelspin does take the shock off the transmission!
In England all hillclimbs have a time beam at 64 feet from the start light beam. If you can cover the 64 mark in 2 seconds, that's 1 G accelleration! The best I can do so far is 2.06 seconds.

Thanks for the comments guys,
Graham.

Red face

911 - you and I should go to CH to do a meeting there.

I think my car is quicker with centre diff lock partially on - does that give any clues to you techies?

Graham,

I *know* it will be much better - it moves the bias rearward because the front is so well tied down...best 500 quid spent on handling once you already done the rear ARB

However, I proved myself to be crap at hillclimbing - the track was coned in sections to keep the speed of our 'street-legal' cars down and I was just too cautious....4 seconds off the pace over 1 mile

On track I slowly build up knowledge and pace...can't do that with only 2 training, and 2 racing charges!

It was Reitnau, quite famous apparently - http://www.bergrennen-reitnau.ch

Dowser, sorry for the delay in the reply, I'm now in Jackson, New Hampshire, USA!
The best bit about hill climbing is the 'all or nothing' charge, got to get it RIGHT!
Please keep in touch!
Regards, Graham.
