Thumbs down

Why ?
There's bound to be an way to hack this one.
And like one of the comments said, you could easily copy the disk, so therefor getting the movie a lot cheaper !

Mind you, if you use P2P software, you don't need to pay in the first place !

Not a bad idea IMHO - it'll be interesting to see whether they take off and how they impact the rental market. I'd much rather buy one of those for say, £3, than rent a disc and then have to go back to the video store again to take it back.

Thinking about it, the coloured layer will have to be on the outside (so it's exposed to the air), and on the non-label surface of the disc (so it gets in the way of the laser). That means it should be possible to scrape it off without damaging the reflective layer - maybe I should invest in one of those 'disc doctor' scratch removing machines?

there is a far simpler way

You can buy 'cd protectors' which are basically clear sticky acetate film, which you can stick on the data side of a CD to protect from scratches. just get some, get the dvd out the packet, apply the cd protector, bingo, chemical on disk no longer has contact with air therefore no longer being able to react.

Cheep films all round!

or paint the back or put a sticker on it so the laser has a reflective surface again
