as above. I bought some of this earlier this year but having read the manual, it seems to suggest 5/40 which ppl here say is too thin. Any risk of damage if I switch to 10/60? Car is MY02 STi7. TIA.

I'm no expert but I run 10w/50 Silkolene in my Uk spec MY00 and it's fine.

 

I switched to castrol RS recently , and the car and now runs so much smoother and quieter!

 

If you look at the STi japan website they sell Motul 15w50 with there own label on it ;-) so 5w40 is probably too thin. I use Castrol 10w60RS in my STi 8, because I cannot find Motul 15w50. Switched from Mobil 1 5W40 after someone said on this forum they wouldn't use it in their lawnmower :-(

Thanks for the replies guys. If my dealer put in 5W40 before, shouldn't I continue to use that until the next service (2.5K Kms away) when I can ask them to put in the 10W60?

I guess I shouldn't just put in a litre of 10W60 when the motor already has 5W40 in it should I?

 

Yeah if you can, wait for the change.

You can mix in an emergency tho, its just not ideal.

 

Sorry for hijack but this is very closely related.

For my MY02 WRX the recommended oil is 5W-30. Is there a synthetic 5W-30 (readily) available?

I want to put in Castrol RS10-60 but am concerned about potential warranty issues. I will argue that the oil is equivalent or better than OEM which is Magnatec 10W/40, but will the Belgians understand?

Is Castrol RS 10W60 better than say Motul 5W30 which is hard to get hold of?

5w30 isnt a recommended oil for daily use in your car (just read your handbook and you will see what i mean )
I would run a 15w50 oil for normal use, extreme cold temps then i would use the 5w30 fully synthetic as approved by Subaru (zero and below!)
Your normal oil is a 10w40 semi synthetic so if you want to keep on using this.....

PS, your engine sounds really noisy when using a 5w30 as it is TOO thin (but the dealers dont seem to read the handbooks that their manufacturer produces )

 

IMHO Castrol RS 10 60 is the best oil you can use in your car, presuming you aren't pootling around all the time like driving Miss Daisy!

I had my dealer , use it on my car at the last service, and I can assure you there are no warranty issues , as it is much higher quality than the Magnatec the dealers use. The guide their told me they would love to use Castrol, but they get magnatec very cheaply, and it is pretty good oil as long as you stick to regular changes

 

Anything is better than magnatec
BUT..... the best oil you can get would be Motul 300v IMHO
which STi Japan use as their branded oil (also used
in rally cars )

It is because I read the handbook that I raised the question

The little graph on p.11-14 shows 5W30 for -x to +40 deg. C and 10W40 for -15 to +x deg C. So either would be suitable for normal UK temperature range.

But underneath the note says "5W30 is preferred". Pretty clear.

I will try RS 10W60 and see how I get on.

 

Last dumb *** question from me for this week...how much oil do I need to supply the dealer with to do the oil change? I have 2 litres and will pick up another 3 today.

It's probably written in the manual somehwere but my manual is in French and I hate reading frog. I really should get an English copy I guess !

 

I use Motul 300V Power 5/40 fully synthentic,car seems much much smoother now and quieter,i mean the SWRT cant be wrong can they!(325bhp STI7)

@nellie: but the SWRT change the oil rather more frequently than the average road user. It may be good for a couple of hundred miles and then break down, not good for road use. Not everything that's suitable for rallying is suitable for the road.

 

I very much doubt the WRC teams use an oil that you can buy over the counter!!!

The three options IMHO are:

1. Redline
2. Motul 300V Comp
3. Castrol RS

Prior to the Scoob, I had an Elise which was supercharged by Turbo Technics.

Their advise on oil was stay clear of Magnatec as it tends to gunk up the turbo bearings from their experience.

They advised Shell Helix Plus.

 

I agree with Matt's comments, I have read in a post on WRX club /Australia that Redline is the best oil regarding base ester synthetics and second is Motul V300.
This was also confirmed by two well known chemists that work for F1 teams and analyse very often various engine oils.
I currently use V300 10W/40 for my WRX03 but due to very high ambient temp(I guess) I had some oil consumption the first 5K kms, hope this will stop before 10K kms otherwise I should change to 15W/50.

Just to complicate things further Stan Palmers use Castrol Magnatex 5-30 Semi Synthetic. I only found this out today, time to change the P1s oil I think.

Price at the moment is about £30+vat for 5 litres.

Hi STI Frenchie !
Castrol RS also for my STI7, since the first oil change. This oil is the only one BMW accept for the M3. 2 track days and the last one with the air @ 32 Celcius , oil temp @ 110 and oil pressure was 6 bar ! only 0.5 bar less than @ 80-90.
