My first photo shows my rear drivers side drive shaft going into the hub. I have a clunk sound coming from this area and have ruled out the suspension and its bushes. The clunk is transmission/drive related as it only happens whilst in gear at low speeds when the accelerator is released (a reverse torque situation). I have noticed excess play when trying to spin the wheel in the area highlighted by the red arrow. The handbrake is on whilst doing this so there should be none (the other side is perfect as I thought it should be). I'm not sure if its the wheel bearing collapsed or the drive shaft knackered. The wheel has no play top to bottom or side to side as per the classic symptoms of a duff bearing. Any ideas?????



My second query is ref my rear diff. I assume that the top plug is the filler and the bottom the drain. Do you just top up until the oil comes out of the top?

you said the wheel turned even though the h'brake was on ,this would suggest a brake caliper fixing prob esp. if the other side is ok,the clunk on reversing may,just may, be the caliper 'backing up ' round the disc a small way before bieng stopped, i could be way off but it may be worth a check....

I didn't explain it fully, when I said it turned, I didn't mean actually turn. It only budged about 1mm, very slightly. It doesn't seem much, but I can hear a definite noise that would be louder with torque on it. Also,when compared with the other rear side wheel there is no play or give at all. Basically the comparison to me speaks volumes.
I have checked all obvious fixings in the area and the caliper is also secure.

You're right about the rear diff. The plugs will be in very tightly as well...
Just make sure the car is parked on a level area when you fill the diff up!

As for the driveshaft thing, I'd suggest having a look at one of the CV joints on that side of the car. It's difficult to be more precise without seeing it for myself - sorry...

 

Yes you are right about the diff. As for the noise it will most likely be wear on the ***** of your cv.
