What are the best pads for fast road use with low dust and disk wear? I was thinking of EBC green or red? Any other ideas?

 

People seem to have bad experiences with EBC but the DS2500 and Mintex 1144 seem to be highly rated on here, but as Hoppy mentions Discs should also be an option.

I did put EBC green on in an emergency and they where sh1te - would have been better off using custard creams..

I've just stuck some Pagid 8 groove disks and RS42-1 pads on my car, retaining the standard 4-pots, and they are excellent. However, after heavily breaking they do give some vibration for a few stops afterwards, and then settle down again. Is this because they are still bedding in? Also there is a grinding noise, is this the grooves doing their stuff?

Your not bedding them in properly if you are breaking hard, i have the same set-up and used gentle breaking for the first 500 miles, i believe this stops the pads from glazing and stabilises the resins whithin the pads. The pagid set-up is far better than the OEM stuff when braking hard, i have no judder after using them hard.

 

I have had them for about 300 miles and have only braked hard a few times recently, having thought they were bed in. Obviously I need to give it a few more miles.

I was told the best way to bed in RS 4-2-1 pads is to take the car to 70 mph (motorway obviously) and jump on them a couple of times. Did mine like that and have had no problems at all.

 

Ferodo DS2500 pads are pretty expensive at about £130 a pait, is it worth paying that much for them when EBC greens are only £60?

 

EBC greens are s**t. Not worth £60. You're better off spending a little bit more money on pads and getting something decent like DS2500's or Pagid blues (my preference). Not only will they last longer (maybe) but the performance is MUCH better.

 

I would pay £130 for Pagid or Ferrodo pads even if the EBC greens were free.

Agree with Paul, i wouldnt fit EBC if they were free, try the Ferodo DS2500 you wont be dissapointed.

Where can I get Ferodo 2500? I need some better brakes ASAP - cooked the standard versions and they really don't work as well as they did ....

Pagid RS 4-2-1 (blue) are about the same price for the 4 pot calipers, and possibly a bit better still. 2 Pots the Ferrodo are a fair bit cheaper.

Pagid RS 4-2-1 (Blue) for me too.

After having Greenstuff on the Elise and 306 I won't be using them again.

Pagid on the Exige are great.

 

Do the Pagid and Ferodo work well when there cold or do they need a good warm up first?

 

modern "race" type compounds offer very good "cold bite" and require no pre-heating (unlike some of the Mintex 1100 series.....) but improve considerably with heat.......
the Pagid rs4.2.1 / Ferodo ds2500 are fairly similiar in operation and designed first and foremost as a v.high performance road pad!!

I've used the Pagid RS421 blacks and now use the RS42 blues, they're better from cold than OE and just get better the warmer they get, I can't recommend them enough. Think my last set of RS 42's cost about £130 from Performance Braking, 01600 713117. Dusting is minimal when compared to other brands, which is good news.

IIRC the RS421's lasted 8k (with a trip to Spa) and the RS42's are similar, my current set have done 6k of road miles plus Donnington and a french trackday and still have about 4k left in them, so wear rates aren't too bad.

Ferodo DS2500 is general favourite. Works for me, I have to say.

PS Edited to add that there's more to brakes than pads - like discs. Stock items are, erm, lacking.
