While driving today my clutch pedal went all the way down & could not enage any gears. This has happen twice now both times with new sti clutch 230mm.At first we discovered that the clutch bearing had disengaged from the spring pressure plate causing the pin from the slave cylinder to pop out also by looking at the fork that holds the bearing , you can see that it has gone to far forward. Never the less i purchased a new bearing & pressue plate the atual clutch was fine (only about 100 miles) and its all happen again today, only covered 50 miles. My questions are that from normal driving (not launching) should this release bearing pop out, has anyone else had the same prob. My car in a 95WRX.

 

Release bearing is retained in a spring clip. It should not pop out.

Sti and UK have different release bearings?

 

I didnt know the two were different. Anyway i carried out a quick visual test on my first clutch the 225mm. I tried to pull the bearing out with my hand, i noticed that this spring clip stopped it from comimg out but also noticed that the clip seated flush to clutch cover & neatly inside the bearing grove. Where as the 230mm clutch looked the same when pulling the bearing the spring clip would not fit perfectly inside & around the bearing grove & the bearing itself would come off when using a bit of force. I have spoken to four independent impreza specialist & explain the way i have fitted the new clutch going through all possible failure & incorrect fitting methods, they all agreed that i had fitted the clutch correctly yet all cannot under like myself why the new clutch i just fitted has had the bearing pop out of the cover(used new release fork & slave cylinder). When i say cover i mean that you can move the bearing fork forwards & back by hand. I havnt taken this new failure off yet as i can push the fork back & the bearing goes back in, sometimes it stays in but eventually it comes back out leaving me to get my car recovered. Im now thinking off removing my clutch and returning it back to the supplier as i feel that it was fitted correctly but yet it has failed.

 

Not being funny mate, but if the release bearing is coming out of the cover then the bearing/cover is at fault...

Thanks for the reply its just what i wanted to hear. I didnt want any greef from the supplier saying it was fitted incorrectly. I was concerned about the method of installment as regards to bearing/release fork and clutch cover. Engine out, gearbox still in car,aligned the new clutch first then pushed the bearing into the clutch cover (double check with hand pull test to see if bearing has located correctly.Then pushed the release fork into the bearing (holding the fork at all times) until the engine & gearbox have mated/closed back together, pushed the dowel back into the fork and tighten everthing up, bleed the clutch & everthing is working fine.But only to last 100 or so miles.

 

The bearing will only go onto the pressure plate one way round.....

The release fork will only go in the casing/bearing one way round.......
