I'm having a problem undoing the crank bolt to change the cambelt on my car. (MY96 Impreza turbo) Does anyone have an idea of what may work?

I've tried the standing on the brakes while in gear thing and then broke a home made tool to hold the pulley still.

I'm off to the scrap yard tomorrow to find some thick walled water pipe to make a new tool, but would prefer to not have to, as it'll probably take me all day.

Any suggestions? The last cambelt I did was a lot easier!

 

12volt impact wrench from Machine Mart, cost £30 inc vat or less, and will shock the bolt off with little trouble. Only down side is radiator, but if you don't have aircon, this isn't really that big a deal.

just to say that when it's done and you have to tighten it up. if you don't do it up tight enough then they tend to shake loose and knacker the end of the crank.

 

Scoobyboy - thanks for the warning. I'm going to get my tourque wrench to it when it comes to reassembly as I've got the specs now.

I wonder who has an impact wrench I can borrow tomorrow?

 

Go to your local tyre fitting station. Get them to slacken it off with Air gun. Just nip it up with a socket, Drive home steady. Works everytime. Ok its costs you a drink but better then kicking and swearing at it.

 

impact right angle ratchet would do it in situ I think.

Put the car into fifth gear - use a long handled wrench.

We did this on my car - thankfully it was Pat doing the wrenching and it came off.

Do the same when tightening it up. We didn't need to take the rad off.

Done it!

A combination of soaking the pestiferous bolt in spray oil over night, finding a bigger bar and a stronger person to stand on the brakes.

There are 2 problms now - 1. it's started to rain and 2. I've sheered 2 of the bolts that hold the fans on the rad. Not happy. At least, since I don't have AC, I only need to have one fan on there. Grumble!
