Question

Hi knowledgeable folks

I'd like to put Castrol Syntrax gearbox oil in my car for it's service next Saturday, but I now live in Germany and nobody's heard of it over here, including Castrol in Germany! So could someone give me the spec of this oil? Is it the same as this:

-----
Castrol TAF-X

Transaxle Fluid · SAE 75W-90 · API GL 4/5 · VW 501 50.

(means: Fully synthetic gearbox oil for Transaxles (transmission and final drive combined, with common lubrication), for which the manufacturer has prescribed a transmission oil meeting API GL 4 or 5. Applicable for all year round use.)
-----

Many thanks for any quick responses...

Cheers
Richard

Richard,

Looking at the Syntrax Universal bottle it says it is "extreme pressure part synthetic manual transmission fluid" It is recommended for all modern transmissions where API GL3,4, or 5 is recommended, Meets or exceeds the API requirements as above and is SAE 75W-90. There are no other numbers etc. on the bottle. It seems to be similar to what you have seen except it states it is part synthetic and The German oil definitely says Fully synthetic. I bet the German version would work except that you had better make sure it will mix with the residual oil in your gearbox during the oil change. Might be different being fully synthetic.

Can't find any more info.
