My 02 WRX has a full decat and ITG panel filter. The 'check engine' light is on, and the dealer informs me that it is the EGT probe that is at fault. He blames the decat for making it run at a higher temperature. It has since been reset but came back on within a day.

Is this a potentially a genuine problem or is it common with these mods.

A fix is to put a 2.2kOhm resistor in the circuit between the EGT sensor and the ECU. No idea how though!

You just stick both sides of the resistor in the egt probe harness, its that simple.

I've had my first probe go (MY02 decat up pipe). If you unplug the original sensor you can push the two leads from a 2k2 ohm resistor into the two connectors in the socket. Put some insulation tape round the socket to keep it watertight.

You can get the resistor from any decent electronics shop like Maplin.

This will give a constant reading around 600 deg C and no check engine light.

If you need to change the sensor it's not to bad:
Take the black plastic cover off that's next to the airbox, undo the two big connectors (the EGT probe connector is under the same cover).

Remove the pipe that comes out of the airbox (2 big jubilee clips).

Disconnect the air flow sensor cable then remove airbox cover and filter.

Remove two bolts that hold the airbox, then lift the airbox out.

You should then be able to get to the EGT probe (14mm open jaw spanner).

Be careful not to drop the spanner or any bits down the side of the engine!

I had to bend the probe to get it out and the sensor end snapped off (luckily in my hand) be very careful of this - if any part of the sensor drops off you would have to remove it from the exhaust or you would damage the turbo.

Fitting the new sensor was a bit awkward, I had to ease a metal insulated rubber hose out of the way the feed the sensor in that way, this may be due to my decat up pipe being a slightly different design to standard.

According to Ecutek the ECU only uses the sensor to warn if the gas temp. is to high, they suggest moving the sensor to after the turbo - but as this will reduce the reading by approx. 150 deg C it would make the sensor a lot less valuable unless you use something like Deltadash.

My new sensor cost approx. £43 (inc VAT), I think it's made by Denso - I wonder if they can be sourced from any other supplier than Subaru?

Edward that is excellent info (having been a victim of EGT sensor failure with full decat). However, I think the snsors just have poor reliability. The exhaust temp in the up pipe should be lower after a decat, less friction from the CAT??
