Question

does the rear diff oil ever need changing at all? or topping up?

reason i ask is that my car has developed a quiet whining noise comming from the back at about 50mph, someone suggested it was the diff but i'm not too sure, i'm thinking wheel bearings.

Allright Dale,

Diff oil is a service item on a turbo. Think its a 60000 miles interval but could be wrong. Just had mine done at 60000 anyway!
If its a wheel bearing and one side only it should get quieter with some "gentle" side to side swerving.

Hope this helps,

Pete

Thumbs up

Diff oil requires changing every 15,000 miles.

I use Castrol Syntrax Universal.

Just to clarify, the diff oil on all impreza's (clasic shape & new age) is changed every 30,000 miles or 3yrs (whichever comes first)

If you look at the rear casing of the diff you will find 2x threaded bungs.

You will need to remove the bottom one for draining (a half inch rachet with no socket fitted will do this) & the upper one is a level bung.

If you get your car level on axle stands and keep filling the diff until the oil runs out of the top hole it is at the correct level.
You will either need a pump or a squeezy bottle with a tube attached to do this.

You should find that any Subaru dealer has the correct oil in stock as they are using this daily. You will need 1.0ltr

Regards
Phil

Hi Phil

Good to hear from some rally experts on the forum!

Just as an aside, Ive always loved the exhaust note on David Higgins' Barretts Subaru.
Do you use a certain make of exhaust on the car, or is it a 'custom' made job?

Many thanks
Mark...

H Mark,

Sorry I haven't replyed earlier, but don't get the chance to "surf" very often.

In answer to your question about the exhaust note from our car, It is predominatley a std Gp"N" stainess system from Prodrive, but we felt it didn't sound "Sexy" enough so ended up playing with the rear section until it had the desired effect, whilst still keeping it within the noise limits of our sport. (There's always a scrutineer around waiting to spoil yr day!)

Regards
Phil
