APS Cold Air Induction Kit
I saw the APS cold ait induction kit a while back...
If I fit this with an air filter (K&N57i seems a popular choice) will it no longer use the MAF, thus getting rid of potention problems on my MY00 with the horror stories of MAF failure when new filters are fitted.
Thanks

Not unless you change to a speed density ECU. If you fit the APS induction kit to a relatively standard UK car your engine might survive. If you fit it to an STi it will probably blow up. YOU HAVE TO REMAP THE ECU WITH THESE INDUCTION KITS OR YOU RISK YOUR ENGINE DETTING ITSELF TO PIECES, a far worse fate that jus destroying a MAF sensor you make it misread so badly.
Yes I am shouting but it is worth doing as a timely reminder.
Having said all that I use this induction kit, but thoroughly research it first!
When I last spoke to APS they said they were going to put inserts in the packaging to the effect that an ECU remap was required.

duly noted! Thanks...
Does the APS kit come with an air filter, or is it just the tubing to get air from front of the car rather than wherever it sucks it in from now (side of engine bay?)

I fitted a K+N C.A.K. a year last February when the car (STi ver 6 Wagon)was standard apart from a revolution exhaust. It was a cold morning and on starting the car would not run or pull smoothly. After it had warmed up I gave it a run to high revs in 3rd gear thinking I might clear a fouled plug. Having done 11mls from starting I picked up no. 2 piston in the bore. Even now I am surprised how easily it happened.
After re-build and with a Link E.C.U I ran the APS CAK successfully for about 20k mls up 'til three weeks ago when I fitted a larger K+N to deal with my substantially increased power level.
The CAK is complete with fiter and all fittings if anybody wants a second hand one.

Harvey that sounds like a nightmare!
I like the sound of this kit over any of the others for performance, but I can't afford a remap at the moment...!!
What does the remap do to stop the cold air kit blowing your car up? Increase the fuelling to stop it running lean and detting with all that cold air in the mix?
Incidentally... will it cause damamge to my engine if I have a downpipe, or even full decat, without a remap? If so, I'll have to put the decat off until I can afford remapping...

Bob Rawle tested the APS and found it ran 25% leaner than using the std airbox, I had one on my STI 5 but again only after I had installed the Link.
Because the ECU is fully mappable you can overcome the problems of the car running lean.

now john, I've just said I can't afford a remap I'm not gonna be able to start buying sodding great big turbo's now, am I...
thanks
back to the cold air business... just saw this website, http://www.skcl.demon.co.uk that does scoops to replace the fake vents. Don't know how effective it would be compared to the APS kit but it looks good...

I too have this induction kit. Car was running lean with the standard ECU and the APS induction kit. John Banks remapped the standard ECU for me, (EcuTek Tek 3), to suit this induction kit and a few other mods, such as a VF23 turbo and all is well now. Don't use it on the standard ECU's map.
Cheers,

darkblueturbo - things you can safely do to your MY00 without a remap:
MY99 ECU (swap one with yours from the For Sale section)
Dawes manual boost controller set for 16.5 PSI with an in car boost gauge
Full decat
K&N 57i induction
Total cost under £500 if you buy second hand and it makes a good all rounder.
Things you can't safely do IMHO:
HKS or APS induction kits without remapping
Ramair panel filter
Fuel cut defenders without a knocklink
Over 18 PSI on the standard turbo
Big turbos without remapping

john - thanks for that list. That should be put in an FAQ on this site, along with same for all other MY
I'll hold off on the cold air kit when I change the exhaust then, until i can afford a remap.
Does that go for ALL panel filters, or just the ramair one? i.e. ITG before I get the CAK
Cheers guys...
