I have a 28,000 mile, 98MY WRX Type R V. Limited

I service it frequently and let it warm up every time i drive it, but it has started to develop piston slap, i know this is the dreaded question everyone goes on about, it is only from cold and goes in about 1/2 a mile

Question 1)

When should i fix it and what will it take

Question 2)

Who or where is best

Question 3)

What mods can i do while i am at it so it never comes back and also to get more power so i don't feel i am spending all my money just to fix a noise

I wouldn't bother unless it becomes truly unbearable...

The official subaru fix was to Teflon coat the piston.... It would still vibrate, you just wouldnt hear it.....

The reason it happens is cos the pistons shrink a bit when cold. As the engine warms up a bit, they expand a little and stop slapping.

I gather a lot of high performance engines are prone to it, and that the Cosworth uprated pistons also do it.... Guess it's the nature of the beast

I'd run it until it makes the noise when it's warm as well, or until it starts using oil, or until you want to upgrade or sell it.

It's just a noise at the end of the day and whilst not nice, it's not actually engine life threatening.

Is that a WRX type R or an STi type R?? Different pistons see.!

Thanks Very much for your input, I had begun to sweat about it

I havn't noticed oil loss or loss of oil pressure

6 bar when driving, oil temp about 85 degrees

Is there a permanant fix, like forged pistons or will it come back?
