Question

OK, running an STI MY94 Wagon, with around 88,000 miles on it. I've been getting a low "moaning" from one of the front wheels, especially at low speeds when turning on full lock. To me, it sounds like a wheel bearing has gone.

Can anyone confirm what a failed wheel bearing would sound like, and wether replacement is a DIY job ? Cheers

not really a diy job if you dont have the right tools... could strip it your self and take it to someone with a press...

Cheers David - any comments about what a failed wheel bearing might sound like ? Problem is, from where it "sounds" like it's coming from, it could be anything from a knackered diff, to a suspension problem, etc etc. Sounds like the bearing, but I'm not sure.

I had a wheel bearing go on my old Pug 205 GTI, but that sounded quite different to this.

Question

I had my rears get a bit noisy & one started making an odd once per rev wooshing type noise.
apparently, they dont go really noisy like other car bearings. (might be a different type ?)

was very difficult to tell if mine had actually gone or not, until they were replaced
but that cured it!

i'd have a good poke around & have a look at CV joints too.
do a few circles in a carpark on full lock, could just be a CV joint (I say JUST ! )

best of luck!

Steve

ScoobyDuck - Cheers, the noise is actually very noticable at low speed on full lock, and seems to be the front passenger side.

Anybody got any experience of the Subaru CV joints ?
