MY 00 ECU swap questions
I want to swap the AE 802 for an AE 801 ECU, but have been told I need to swap the keys, barrel and a black box thingy under the steering column aswell. Is this proceedure straight forward, cos I don't want to bugger the car up and my warranty at the same time? Or should I just pay for a Tek 1 re map?
Have heard from a couple of well known Subaru breakers that its cos of the immobiliser you have to change other stuff aswell. Yet various posts on here offer different advise.
Cheers for that. You'd think people who break/salvage these for a living would know what they are talking about.Do you get better MPG out of the 801 cos it's running a bit leaner and also does the kick in the back come in a bit earlier?
Confirm you do not need to do anything with keys. Since I have done it literally hundreds of times I am certain.
Fuel economy - possibly if using full boost, but at cruise they will be about the same.

Well Mr P20SPD, or Steven which ever you prefer, I am 32 and yes I am currently living in the fine borough of Liversedge. Originally Roberttown during my early years but now Hightown with a newly aquired MY00.
Have been offered AE 800 today. Is it inferior to 801 or better? I take it that the whole reason I started this thread re possible immobiliser problems with 801,my new found wisdom would also apply to earlier 800 ecu?
(off thread, could chuck a stone into your old back garden from where I am. Was a Roberttowner, have been on t'other side 'o valley for only 4 years.)

I believe there is no appreciable difference between an AE800 and an AE801.
As you suggest same rules apply to the two ECU's just plug and play, did it to my MY00 a few months back, and the difference on my car (cos it can vary apparently) was quite astonishing. Course no-one warns you that when you get used to it, you crave PPP, Tek2, Tek2.5, Tek3, Link, FMIC..... In fact don't do it sell the car, buy a rail card ............

Thanks for the advise, but I fear I am already on that never ending path to Impreza nirvana. Just when you think you've reached it, the hunger for more takes over and you know another mod is just round the corner.
In Australia we were recently offered a free upgrade on our 99/00 models to get a immobiliser keypad which came out standard on 01 and onward models. Not sure if you guys have the same thing but do you have any idea if a ECU swap will effect the immobiliser keypad?
Have bought and fitted AE 800 ECU to MY00 recently. It works perfectly. No immobiliser issues at all. The later classics (98-00)had the immobiliser gubbins off the ECU.Not sure about earlier ones though. All the breakers I spoke to tried to sell me the keys, ignition barrel and a black box thingy for under steering column with the ECU's, just so they could charge more I think. One well known breaker (beginning with "G") said I shouldn't listen to advise on Scoobynet cos it's full of a*** holes who don't know what they are on about. I trusted John Banks advise. He was right. They were very wrong.
