Lo all,

Just got a Magnex 6x4 ovel full cat back system fitted..sounds very good when driving the car hard but the drone at 70 on the motorway is utterly unbarable.........how do you all put up with the noise....or does it get a wee bit quieter when it gets coated......if it doesnt get quieter any ideas if there is anything i can do to baffle the sound down a bit............
wife will kill me if this is it ......

What centre section do you have?

The resonated centre section should help to quieten things down a touch.

 

standard from front to end off cat pipe then goes staight through to the end in SS..... was going to decat it as well but that is out now i think.

Not 100% sure for the sport, but Magnex make for the turbo a centre section which has a resonator in it, which should help quieten things down a bit.

love the sound it makes but it is just tooooo noisy at 70.....
Induction kit doesnt help either mind you .......sounds like a jet when i thrash it........nice for the track but not day to day drivin......

I have the resonated centre on my Scoob, and it really isnt that bad on the motorway, depends what speed I stay at

around 70 it is ok, around 80 it is more drony, but I guess this is down to frequencies etc and my ears

 

you must have very sensitive hearing. I have heard a lot of Magnex systems, and they are one of the quieter exhausts around.
You want to hear a loud one??? Try Blitz, or HKS..They are LOUD !!!!!! All the time

it was almost painful going into town today and thats only 20clicks

it really is load gonna have to tighten every bolt on the car it vibrates that much .....even more than the wifes "rampant rabbit"

Mine is, and I can't even hear my stereo. Next plan is to sound deaden the boot with some BJ Acoustics stuff

 

You want to try a Type R with 300bhp+ with decatted system and firestorm ! (no sound insulation in Type R).

I did find 70mph on a motorway was painful, so just upped the speed to around 90mph and the drone goes away.. maybe 70mph is some kind of "natural frequency" of the bodyshell ??

 

Magnex are quieter on turbo impreza's cos the turbocharger quieten's the sound but you stick one on a non turbo and they can be really loud and droney cos of the large tailpipe.

 

My full scoobysport is loud but not that bad, this is on a Turbo wagon..

You can try a resonated centre and try exhaust wrap, I have the downpipe wrapped, but as you have standard downpipe no point wrapping that but you could wrap the centre..

Try 75mph or 80mph or 65mph the droning noise changes depending on the engine speed..

You could put sound proofing in the boot too..

Try some sound proofing mats or sound insulating material (the thick felt stuff) in the boot, under the back seat and over the wheel arches.

That takes a little bit off the edge of the boominess in my 5dr, with PE twinpipe.

I'm sure it gets quieter the more you drive it, which I was wondering were carbon deposits around the padding in the silencer, or my eardrums are now perforated from the booming.

The other option that cuts the booming is an equal length header, according to Stephen Done.

I have the same Exhaust on MY02 and yeah is loud but not "utterly unbarable" when at 70

 

There's a local motor store which supplies the local racer boy scene. In their ICE section, it's about 12.99 for a 4' X 3' piece; I've since bought 3 pieces, to cover the boot entirely.

Note that it isn't 'that' effective.

I'm thinking of trying their acoustic mats soon.

i too have a 6by 4 mag on my oo sport cat back. my missus found it too loud as well and give me worse earache than the magnex!
so as a remedy, i put the original subaru centre section back on, and mated it to the mag b/b.sorted! no more vibes through the passenger seat up my wifes backside, and definately a more suttle growl.

I don't like loud exhausts either. I feel stupid going through some quiet village in Switzerland with full Ali G. sound effects. Have tried to tone it down so I get decent flow with minimum noise

Currently running with ported and gasflowed standard manifold, SS DP, STi center, and SS Back Box

Prodrive boot carpet laid on top of standard one does help *inside* the car

I've thought about putting the original back, but it'd mess up the rather pleasing effect of the Tek 2

I'll try and compromise with a resonated centre the next time I get the car serviced.

 

I used to have a mk1 Golf gti which I put a Piper Tornado system onto....crap quality system! The baffles gradually rusted and it got louder and louder until I changed it back for a std system.....what a relief!!!

On my 2000MY Turbo I have a scoobysport stainless rear box (single round pipe) bolted to the std system and it's great. Audible, but muted at idle and low throttle/revs, but comes alive at full throttle & higher rpm......going through tunnels with the windows down is amazing!

Been noise tested at the Ring and just passed. Was not able to get a straigt answer from the Ring guys about exactly what dB's I was producing.....they said "4.5 out of 5"....what ever that means?

More NVH material in the boot and even on the back of the rear seats will help alot!

Only helps on the inside, but...
I have found that putting the sound-deadening material (sticky-backed tar-like stuff rather than fluffy/carpet type) under the back seat works well. That bit seems to produce a lot of the drone, anyway.
(With a bit more clarity what I mean is removing the sitting-on bit, cleaning the metal now revealed with thinners, etc. to remove the crud, then putting on Dynamat, etc.)
