Why are some of the dates on threads miles out

Some are saying May 2003 some June. Whats going on????

I think its throwing the search thing off course somewhat

If you look, when a post is edited, the date for the edit is given in american format (mm/dd/yyyy). When it so happens that this is a valid UK date (albeit the wrong one) the post gets that date tagged to it.
