Dudes

Got a spanking new evo 7 RS11, done 6k miles in 4 months and the clutch has gone!!

I can hear ya hoooowling with laughter!!

It seems to happen a lot to Evos, yet Mitsi won't replace it under warranty, so its sitting in their car park at the moment. I'm telling them that 6k miles isn't reasonable wear & tear.

Just wondered if you could give me some scooby help!

How long will a clutch last in a 280bhp Impreza?
Anyone had any warranty claims or problems with short lived Clutches?
What are Subaru's customer service people like?

All help much appreciated

Mike

Who are you dealing with -- your local dealer, or with Mitsu's central customer service / complaints team? The dealer will do nothing until told to by the central team ...

Even if they stress the wear & tear aspect, a clutch is not a service item, they should at the very least pay all the labour and a contribution to the parts costs.

If that don't work, complain to Watchdog, get evidence from other Evo drivers, etc.

Give us some more info, too.

cheers, Craig (42,000 miles in my old UK Scoob on original clutch)

Cant believe that. Speak to Mitsubishi head quarters direct. Explain the problem, it is not a serviceable part IMO.

6000 miles is ridculous IMO, unless you drive like a complete idiot

My scoob ahs done 16000 miles at approx 250/260bhp and then 10000 miles at 350ish, all on the standard clutch.

All depends on what clutch is fitted..
I have just got about 6k out of my clutch on a 300+ scoob..
However, that has included 3 drag days..

Thanks for your replies.

The car is at SGT Maidenhead, who are the main dealer. They're being very good, but as you say, won't touch the car without Mitsubishi or my say so. If I authorise the strip down, I'm liable for ALL the costs.

I'm dealing with Mitsu HO in Cirencester, who are just not interested. I've given them til 13th March to put the car right with an upgraded clutch or I'll reject the car.

The car has only done road miles, hasn't done any mad standing starts, to sum it up, tyres, brake pads are only 50% used.

I financed the car through Lotus in Cardiff, so they really own it, so they're involved as, ultimately, the car will go back to them.

Loads of letters going from my side, but nothing heard back yet!!

Loads & loads of Evo owners have had thier clutches go v early on, but they pay for them to be replaced which is bl**dy ridiculous!

I've got my solicitor involved and he says there are case laws about hardnosed manufacturers who only buckle at the last minute when a court date is given to them. His view is that the clutch is substandard to the job it was intended to do.

You guys don't seem to have nearly as many problems as the evo's do...

My concern is that they WILL replace the clutch foc this time, but what happens when it goes again in another 6k miles?

Clutch is OE, no standing starts, tyres and brakes are only 50% used.

I've told Mutsi that James Baggott @ Auto Express and Tony Bailey @ Evo Mag are keen for more details.

Bring on Rumpole of the Bailey..!

It's a good idea to get a magazine on your side .... but ONLY if Mitsu UK give you a definite "no" to any warranty / replacement. If you go in too early it may be counterproductive.

Can you do a poll on the Evo forums of who's had clutches done on Evo 6 & 7 models? Any supporting evidence for a multiple failure is good news for you.

Mitsu are deliberately exploiting the "performance car" aspect of the Evo 7 to avoid warranty claims -- the inference being that it's a fast car, so it gets abused by owners.

When my Version 5 Type R was running stock with the exception of an exhaust the clutch was A1. Car only covered 6,000 miles.

As soon as it was set up after mapping of Water Injection and increase in boost , the clutch immedicately gave in (235bhp@wheels)

Spoke to mitsubishi - they're quite prepared to go the court route, so I'm gonna break the piggy bank open and go big time.

My solicitor has recommended a barrister who reckons will do the business -well experiencrd in this type of case law.

Mitsubishi reckon I'm going to far, who knows, I just can't stand being gang raped by a corporate!

The thing that amazes me is they really, REALLY expect me to take it...

If you are really going to go to court over this I'd reccommend that you stop discussing it publicly until after the case. I'd be surprised if your solicitor hasn't said the same thing to you too. Let us know what happens when they back down.

For your Info I've had three clutch flywheel replacements on MY99 UK Turbo all changed under waranty (1st at 7K, 2nd around 19K and third at about 40K) to overcome juddering clutch (not quite the same I know). Subaru were prepared to do this each time for me without any worries. Oh and the car was purchased from SGT though they didn't do all the replacements.

Not overly relevant but my clutch went Pete Tong recently on me UK scoob not huge power & as far as i no original clutch on nearly 80k miles. Although it did slip etc & again as far as i no aint the best thing & is certainly weak point between large powered engine & lots of grip c/o all 4 wheels. So 1 AP racing organic clutch later & no longer weak point i can (if i wanted to) red line it & side step clutch with no slipping. If yer having 2 pay owt towards it then i'd recommend u get a decent un like the AP organic or similar
Im tempted 2 set aside £800 when i get my next scoob & do it whether it needs it or not as it makes car feel so much sweeter (NB£800 includes lightened flywheel + a few other bits)
