Urgent help needed knocking end
I appreciate, youwont see too much, but yes, after removal of sump, you can just about get to "look" at the big ends, but make sure there is no blockage or sludgy sediment in the oil pickup, would also check the backplate on the oil pump on next strip down, as they quite often shake loose, thus loosing oil pressure.

Kev, was it you at Mcdonalds Long water lane last night.
I was in the black STI wagon at the pub and met up at Long water.
I think I have done the same to mine!!!!!?????
It now rattles under load and when you first start up.
I thought the STI engines were bullet proof, but im am off for a second opinion today so i will keep you posted.

Been to Clives at lunch time, and Norwich engine centre, both have said its the big end, just as I figured and just as you describe. What are the chances off that, 2 in one night on the smae bit of road.
I think mine went because i missed a gear between 4th and 5th and had it bouncing off the limiter without any load, but you would expect a 50k STI to handle this!??!
I only noticed the knocking when I pulled out of Mcdonalds car park, so I limped home not exceeding 2k. Will it wreck anything else if i run it again? i.e. bits of metal in the turbo feed pipe etc.?
I have spoke to several people and they are talking 2.5k + VAT just for a short motor!
I`m gutted!!!
Any suggestions anyone..................PLEASE ADVISE.
Do i re-build the motor i have, go for a 2nd hand lump or a new bottm end? Either way not a lot of change from 2 grand.
Kev my mobile no. is 07789818554 if you get a chance to call.

Kev,
just need a standard bottom end, uk or wrx, 1994 type etc. miles arent too much of a problem as long as it runs sweet and doesnt smoke.

to do the job properly mate, you need to take the engine apart ie heads etc off, then split the block.
remember that when the big end bearings go, they damage the surface of the crank journal too, so at the very least you need a regrind and undersize bearings. if building for high power, many people opt for a new crank, about £425 + vat new.
engine isnt difficult, just remember where all the bits go, quite a few more than an average engine, and for the same reason, takes a bit longer to do too.
cheers

p.s. yes if you could let me know on the short block costs, cheers.

Kev,
Thanks for the call and advise, I don`t intend to start it again until problem is sorted. Could you please send me contacts for anyone with an STI/WRX manual or details of Torque settings.
Good luck with the spanners and keep me posted.

When my big end went it started with knocking under load for about 15 - 20 miles (While I was wondering what that noise was -DOH!!)then just got so loud I knew it was f**ked.
