Well, no my new one's having a go. When starting the motor up from cold, engine starts with misfire, blows blue smoke,then, eventually clears,only just had 1k service.
When outside temp below zero, not a problem, but at the moment, with air temp at around 2 - 8 deg, even the start up to drive home at night is un nerving, watching all this blue smoke comming out of the exhaust pipe.
Been to dealers with it, but nothing to report yet,engineers dont have a "fix".

 

It sounds like it might be pretty serious. If its running lumpy and blowing blue smoke on start up, it sounds like its getting oil into the bores whilst turned off. I would do a compression test on it and check the water/oil for oil/water.

 

Compressions are fine, no mixing of fluids at all, when engine temp is at normal or below freezing, its perfectly ok, sorry to shoot down in flames, but dealer has no options or suggestions yet, as its a new prob for Subaru Uk and they are trying to translate the fault scenario into japanese at the moment.

 

I'm assuming that the first thing they did was plugs and coil packs?

 

Blue smoke = oil, if bad this will start to foul plugs very quickly
I would insist on a compression test, not good at all by the sound of it.
If it is missing badly I would avoid driving it much at all, get the dealer to take it back and lend you another car till they fix it, if your not happy seriously consider rejecting the car, I would.

I've never come across a healthy car pushing out blue smoke and certainly wouldn't not expect it on a car with a little over 1000 miles. Could be a few different things causing it but sounds likely that there is oil in places it shouldn't be and is fouling the plugs a bit - strange that it doesn't do it when freezing though....

I guess it could just be taking some time for the piston rings to bed into the bores but well worth it being looked at.

Certainly should be seriously looked at by the dealer.

My car has periodically blown blue smoke on cold start up (STI7) and I believe others have this "feature" too.

 

I'm glad you said that russell,as mine does as well and I was a little worried.

Quite a few owners also have reported bad starting.

This may or may not be related to the fuel pump issue.

My car can't seem to decide whether to run a fast idle or not at the temperatures we are having at the moment. After a few seconds though it's fine.

 

Mines always ticks over fine in the morning, also fine now the PPP has been fitted, but it does like to puff out some blue smoke on start-up

 

Oil usage 1/2 Ltr to 2K miles ish and puff of blue smoke is common on my and others STi7's. As the Engines are 95% simular wouldn't expect any different from the UK STi8. JDM Sti8 is 75% differrent IIRC IMHO

Yep! Blue Smoke on start up after sitting for the night.

My STi7 occasionally also fails to start first time and blows blue smoke for the first few seconds.

 

stratman - are you sure the blue smoke isn't unburnt fuel being pushed out the back if it didn't start 1st time?

 

I would tend to drift towards the unburnt fuel side of things, the car has got PPP fitted with the 03 kit, which includes high pressure fuel pump, but now a freinds STi, only a couple of months older, but in standard format, without PPP kit is also doing similar tricks at startup, but only, as I say, when in a certain temp range of 0 - 4 deg's. Its perfectly ok above or even below zero. yes, it has got IMHO baffled as yet, dont have a fix or cure for this one!
