What downpipe will give best bhp/results for a my99 wagon with ppp (ecu and middle/rear exhaust sections), any info appreciated, prices etc results etc, any probs with boost etc

Hello again!

I had my downpipe fitted a few months ago and had a wrangle with myself over a nice shiny twin dump pipe or just a straightforward replacement pipe........until the kindly gentleman who was going to fit it (very honestly - a credit to his profession!) told me that the cheaper one would give exactly the same performance gains as the flashier looking twin dump pipe and that I wouldn't notice the difference......

That pipe was from Midland Impreza (www.midland-impreza.com) and cost me £110 +fitting........

After fitting, (with an induction kit - which I wouldn't say was necessary, and I had to change my MAF sensor shortly after....) The boost has upped a little bit to 1.1 bar (held).... the spool up speed of the turbo is now REALLY quick - its boosting from 2500rpms..... VERY sexy. It boosts a bit harder when it's really cold, but its not reached dangerous levels, so I've stopped worrying!

 

Well the twin pipe from magnex got my vote and cash..

i've got the TSL downpipe and can't fault it at all

 

Wouldn't go for a twin dump again personally as my wastegate flap can catch on the divider, and also I am not convinced over the flow properties.

 

As per sipie, I have the Magnex. Good value and the quality is very good, good welding etc...

But would agree with John, There is no real advantge of dividing the wastegate gas.

Go for an 'open neck' design as opposed to the hks or twin dump styles. My advice to save you from my hassles.

T75 twin dump by Power Engineering, You will feel the deferent before and after (6)

 

Any pipe twin dump or not is gonna give you gains. Both will not have a dirty great cat in the way so there is fun to be had either way.
Personally i would pick the cheapest option available.
Fact is, if you drove your car with a twin dump and then with an open neck, you will not be able to tell the difference.
My car has the Magnex twin dump.

I have a Magnex twin dump, apart from the fact it rubbed on the steering rack under hard cornering when I first fitted it (I cured this by making a new gearbox braket up) I'm really happy with the performance.

 

The only 'concrete' advice I can give you is ; Don't go for a HKS downpipe!

I was going to go for the HKS one but then heard that it wasnt as good or a few people had problems with this so i went with the Scoobysport

 

If I had the money, the PE one with the sports cat every time, no arsing around at MOT time. It really is a pain in the ****.

So that brings me on to my next question...
what are all these high flow performance sports cats about, i have seen a downpipe by G Goode's that is a "downpipe with high flow sports cat"
Now this is a little expensive (but flexible friends help)so do these pass emmissions on mot ? and do thery give some wollop to your car....or rather my car lol 99scooby + ppp + dawes ???

 

Centre section takes about 10 minutes to change even for a complete mechanical muppet like myself. But if you want fit and forget you need a cat.

 

yes but your a complete muppet who works the ecutek systems so in a muppet legue your sort of like muppet royalty lol
i however am a muppet peasant, have no skill or patience with cars so going near them mechanically is a disaster, these sports cats are looking around the £300 mark, so not cheap, they are more expensive than the decatted downpipes, which is what creates my confusion ????
everyone says get a decat downpipe because you get more bhp quicker spooling etc, because the cat isnt there ?! ?!
so are the more expensive sports cat downpipes better or worse??? and would it be worthwhile to get an uppipe while im getting into debt ????

Don't bother with the uppipe at this level of power. Sports cat will be more expensive, and no more powerful, probably slightly less powerful than no cat.

Whilst I can work ECUs, I am a muppet with a spanner, honestly.

Some one suggested that I get an HKS downpipe on my car. Why should I not get one. Did you have a bad time with it?

so these ggr sports cat downpipes are ok on a my99 ppp'd car, they give about 10bhp????? and will pass emissions and dont necesarrilly need remapping ????

AS far as I know.......... the sports cat jobby puts a little bit of backpressure into the system, which will prevent any overboost issues from the decat (hopefully!) and may let it go straight through an MOT without any arsing about. They aren't as big on power as a full decat though - eeeeeeew. sod that!

My opinion....for what its worth is..... An MOT costs a fraction more at a friendly scooby garage for them to fit a cat and MOT it.... the downpipe is cheap as chips - mine was £110..... boost increased slightly - up 0.1 bar - but this I see as a bonus, as its not at a dangerous level..... my MY99 required no remapping on the PPP ECU - I reset the fella immediately after the pipe was fitted and never looked back.

As to fitting it - it looked like a bit of a pig! I'm glad someone was doing it for me on a ramp - I'd have struggled to do it myself, although I've done exhausts on my other cars previously.

All things considered...... get your cash out and prepare for a BIG smile!! The exhaust note is worth the money - let alone the power gain......

 

after doing my homework,i would go for the hayward+scott open neck down pipe,its very good quality,and has had very good results and reviews on here.
go to the scoobynet shop on here and have a look.

 

Try going to BlackThorn Auto Cats. I fitted one to my RS2000 4x4 when the std one broke up and tried to block the nice Magnex system. They are made using a metal substrate so will not break like ceramic or get damaged by oil,petrol ect and still work if they get a good old knock.
My MOT results were fantastic and these things give sod all resistance to flow.

For the little welding I need to fit the cat the way I wanted to into my exhaust system I went to Zorstec (www.zorstec.net) in Bradford. I can not recommend this guy enough. His work is awsome and cheap.

 

hmmm thanks for all the helpful input, still tempted by the sports cat downpipe, i think your only loosing a couple of bhp as compared to the decatted downpipes. so i would gain maybe 10bhp instead of 12ish???
i think i might be able to live with that,
anyone out there got the ggr sports cat downpipe on their scooby ????

HKS downpipe covers the wastegate exist in the same way as the standard downpipe..

Need an Open neck or twin dump.. HKS is neither.. I prefer the idea and of open neck.. all this gained from people in the know...

Your car Steve was pretty throaty when you visited, what do you have on it?
