Unhappy

If its not one thing its another!
After reseting the ECU last night and cleaning the boost solenoid, the car is now jumping on idle. Its fine when cold but when hot it sits there jumping between 0 and 1 on the rev counter, and a whirring noise from the engine.

Any ideas on what it is - cure/fix?
Did it before, last time ECU was reset but fixed itself and has been fine for about 4 months since!

Just a quick thought, did you replace all the pipes correctly on the Boost Solenoid??
Sorry if i am stating the obvious but its a start

you dont have the ecu check connectors still plugged in do you?

unplug the MAF sensore and see if changes how it idles, if its the same then your maf is dead, if it idles worse then your maf is ok.

Could be the idle control valve, but check the above 1st

No mate - I did leave them connected but remembered last night and unplugged them!

Strange thing is theres no pattern - will check unpluging the maf. Then try the idle solenoid.

Strange though, it did it before last time after an ECU reset, but then stopped doing it and as I said, been fine for ages. Last time Delta Dash didn't show up any faults.

Don't know about the other sensors, but the Lambda & MAF can be misreading (badly) but the ECU doesn't 'recognise' it as a problem until they aren't reading at all. The mixture is just screwed, either on cruise or on boost & at idle depending on what's not working!

Well I tried unpluging the MAF while the car was idling badly and it stalled so I guess the MAF is ok then, as IMO stalling is worse than bad idling . Recent checks on Delta Dash showed my MAF was giving the correct sort of readings that you would expect to see.

Next I'll try cleaning the idle solenoid, I've done a search but not hugely confident I know exactly the procedure. Anyone know how I should do this on an MY99? Eg what pipe to take off and where to spray the cleaner?

Is this the way you did it?

Perhaps try again , leaving them connect might have done something ?

FIXED

Popped in to PE, and Merv not only sorted the boost, but diagnosed it was actually a faulty MAF and was on the edge of being so bad it could kill the engine. A BIG HUGE THANKS TO MERV

Not my DD, was a friends, used a month or 2 ago but was ok then.

The ECU reset showed up the fault straight away by the hunting idle, and Merv said it was a key sign that the MAF was in its final throws of life

He has a supply of the new sensors in stock (4 outputs instead of 5) and as yet has not had one of them need replacing on the cars they've put them on, where the old ones did......

The select monitor showed it giving a value like WOT on idle and thus the ecu was having to pull back to get the lambda to kick in. As soon as the new MAF went on it showed it having to add fuel to get the lambda to kick in Was also leaning out WOT due to being knackered so hence why the car was going a tad quicker beforehand.

Anyhow, car is all sorted now and behaving very well, set my mind at ease now Top stuff

What sized restrictor did Merv drill yours out to?

Have you thought about getting a HKS EVC unit?

I must admit I'm not missing all this overboost/restrictor woes

Hope it's sorted now

John

John,

It needed a 1.3mm restrictor in the end to bring boost and peak down to acceptable limits. The car is now running a peak of no more than 1.3 (the same if not less than before) and 4th and 5th are holding 1.2-1.25, pretty much what it was before.

I also think I do indeed have a TD04 from the bugeye fitted. Merv also echo'd thoughts on here it is a better turbo, spooling up quicker and holding longer. I'm getting full boost of about 1.25 in 5th by 2500k revs was almost 3k before Merv also confirmed the map I have is ok for this turbo with regards to fueling etc.

As for the HKS EVC, nope haven't thought about it. Once I have the 60k out of the way next month, and then tax and insurance the following months I'm probably going to have a 3 port solenoid fitted and a custom remap by Bob Rawle when I can get some cash together.

You enjoying the new motor?

Cheers
Neil.

Dunk,

I imagine it depends on the time during 98 it was built. If you have the same air intake system as the MY99 with the thin element MAF then it should fit, and even if not, you never know, they could well have some of the older ones in too - give em a call
Merv is on 01895 464646.

Good luck
Cheers
