Poo picture i know. The one on the right is ported, the one on the left is not.

Basically take the manifold off and you wiil see soot lines on the headers, that is because the gasket has a bigger bore to the header. All you have to do is grind away the metal to the soot lines, flaring it in as it goes down the pipe.

We used an air powered grinder IIRC, which made it easy, some people use their black and decker or dremel, but that takes longer.

Hope it helps.

No real downside as far as i am concerned, its supposed to give you better spool up, but as i did alot to the car at the same time i could not comment.

I see a few slip-ups there

If you do this with a die grinder then wear a mask......

Steven is that mine or yours??

We were using a die grinder... wtf would you want to wear a mask?

Saftey glasses yes..

Also we used a TCT Cutter... and 80,000rpm and a tct cutter its hard not to slip..

Also get some new gaskets steven..

Got ported headers on my MY02 at the same time as up-pipe, so can't definitely say which mod did what, but defo helped with turbo coming in earlier, bigger torque curve, etc. Also seemed to reduce some of the boominess from the exhaust at low revs whilst making it snarl more (in a very nice way) at high revs. To my mind quieter when you're not using it, and more & nicer noise when you are is exactly what you want. I have a noticeably better torque curve than some people with a similar setup but without ported heders, so I suspect they help a fair bit.

Downside? Cost if you pay someone else to do it. Hassle if you don't. That's about it to my mind. Oh and change the gaskets!

Flat4... POFF...

Mine are neat, but stevens were done quick.. (his side was neater though..)

Just to add I have broken three fingers on my right hand, severed three tendons.. and as a result it hurts.. When it gets cold... air tools get cold...

Mask? Well when I had the Die Grinder going at 24000rpm with carbide burrs, the air was filled with metallic dust and that can't be good for you! My whole garage was covered with particles of metal, it went everywhere.

I wore goggles as well of course.

You chaps must be made of metal by now from the amount you must have breathed in, perhaps they'll make Terminator 3 with you as extras?

More like bloody splinters, as i can testify. Having to lie underneath the car putting the bloody things back on, 1000's splinters in hair (what little i have), it bloody hurts.

David - IIRC scoobysport charge £200 to port them for you, which is what you'd be competing with, I guess.

dont bother.. they wont touch it...

You want a tct cutter... they are quite pricey though... and you need a die grinder really.. not a drill.

I used a parallel Tungsten Carbide Burr when I did mine, ripped it out in short order and with a good smooth finish. Available from most tool shops or the likes of RS Components or Farnell. As David says stones will just clog up, a course one can be used for touching up though.

cheers

out of interest, I was going to have the turbo side manifold built up with weld so it could be enlarged to mate with a larger up-pipe.

On this subject, I want to get set up with a die grinder of some sort. I have considered getting a compressor, but need a large one to be worth it. I've also considered an electric one with a flexible shaft drive. Electric is a lot quieter if you do much with it, and you never have to wait for air.

Also combined with the fact I would like a decent impact wrench. I have a 3/8" snap-on one, but seems to be on permanent loan to someone. Was thinking of one of the 1/2" drive cordless ones from sealey, about £240 on offer.
