How difficult is doing a cam-belt swap? I know I'm going to have to remove most of the crap in the engine bay, but otherwise is there any reason I shouldn't do this myself i.e. special tools required or specialist knowledge?

There's a link for you. Its not as difficult as some might say it is. The hardest part was lining up the pulleys.

If you are confident that you can stop the timing wheels from moving between removing the old belt and fitting the new one you should not have many problems. Some wooden wedges are handy for this. You can get it done for £100 which gives proof that it has been done if you come to sell the car and to my mind it would save some potentail grief.
