Hey All,

I posted a thread ages ago about making my 5th gear longer so it made for lower rpm motorway cruising !

Some guy said he was getting his done and that he would get back to me regarding ease of conversion and approximate cost.

Can anybody help ??

Ive got my type R done but it was done before i got the car so i dont know how much it cost, does the 160 easily.

 

jumps out of reverse aswell when clutch fully lifted cause its on the same syncromesh

AFAIK, we can fit the 5th Gear from an RA V limited or we can change the front and rear diffs complete. I think ChristianR has done this method as it changes all 5 gears.

Or you could just fit the complete 50/50 system from a WRX (22mph per 1000rpm, same as P1!) and make some money on your adjustable set-up.

These are all the options I have been considering.

Scott: You probably have .825 fifth gear in which case .738 will lift your fifth gear to give around 23,9mph/1000rpm in 5th.
You need to satisfy yourself as to what you actually have just now and then the options can be calculated.
If your dif is 4.444:1 then all 5 gears can be raised with 3.9 diffs.

Lads,

Just had this done (5th changed to 0.738 ratio) on my Linked V5 Type R. Unless you're doing a track day every other day this is the easiest way to get a decent motorway cruising speed at decent (low-ish) revs. Had the synchro's done too.

I also have a Link in my R and the motorway driving is the only downside to the car.

5th gear from an RA wont help you. what you need is the 5th gear from some of the RA/R V-Ltd's. Its just the standard, non RA/R 5th from an STi.

Not all V-Ltd RA/R's had the higher 5th.

Personally, i prefer the car now i have a normal RA 5th, it's much nicer to drive, especially cross country.

I can see why someone doing lots of motorway miles would want to put a higher 5th in though, it just used to drive me nuts having such a big rev diference between the 4th and 5th.
