Can I just stick a Turbo Unit on my Sport ?
#1
Hi there, just on my way home tonight in my mates cossie - I just love the dump valve !
I think Norman Cook should do a remix of a Dump Valve doing its biz ! Just wondering if I could get a Turbo specialist to fit a Turbo Unit on my Sport 98 - 4 dr. Are there many differences with the turbo and non turbo engines ? Is it just the manifold arrangement that is different ?
Any help or past experience would be grateful - cheers - oh btw. nearly forgot - Penni - *kiss*
happy Valentines day

Hi phil,
sometimes you make me laugh so much with your optimism it hurts
There is no way you could do what you suggest.
The compression ratio on the turbo is 8:1 on the sport it is 10:1. Put a turbo on your sport and watch the head blow off and the pistons melt, great fun
The heads are totally different, the pistons, rods, crank charicterists are totally different. The gearing is diferent etc etc etc.
It would cost you an absolute mint to do this.
If you are joking then nice one
if you are not then you should never tackle a job like this yourself as there would be alluminium flying everwhere in seconds
youve realy cheered me up with this one, a classic

Hi Phillip,
With the amount of time and cash you would plough in to a turbo conversion, you might as well have bought a UK turbo outright.
Stick with the sport for a bit, then up grade. Think about the new scoob thats coming out soon. Wait for that. Bound to be worth it.
If not, do a few upgrade here and there on the sport.
Few thoughts to ponder!

Guys,
It's not that sheer impossible to add a turbo to a non oem turbo car. The US boys are doing that on their 2.5RS Impreza turbo, producing 300 horses at mild boost (7 psi = 0,5 bar).
It all depends on the engine. I've turbocharged my MX-5. I've not changed the engines internals, but I am running 1 bar of boost with a compression ration of 1:9.4. And no pinging.
Must add however that I have fitted larger injectors and a LINK ECU for fuel delivery and optimum timing. I doubles the power. However now the differential is the weak link.

of course, anything is possible.
You would have to be mad to do this on a sport when the turbo is readily available.
The dynamics of this conversion would be to$$.
Imagine trying to explain it to the insurance company or trying to sell it on.
I just put how comical i thought the idea was

putting a supercharger on is much easier, especialy if it is a centrifugal unit.
You would still need to drop the compression ratio and change the ECU to sense boost however.
Penni sounds sexy when she talks like that

yawn !! sorry lads and lasses - I've just woek up since my posting - honest - so in one word Penni - no two or maybe three - *I'm knacker8d* erm can you pass me some lucozade iso stuffy please - Well I'm glad I make someones day (philly didnt get a Valentine) I can just picture you pis8ing yourself John !
I aint no engine guru and yes I was being serious (you've now got my back up lads/lasses esp. penni !!!) I'm gonna stuff your Turbo's into the nearest Turkey when we meet again - ahahahaha - yup - gonna start with one of those tail pipes from scooby sport - do they really make your (non turbo!!!!) scooby sound like Eddie Irvines F1 Jag ? ? ? ? - oooh cant wait - 4 weeks to go !!! anyone off to Silverstone ? oh heck now thats another siwwy question I'm gonna get my personality teased about - oh well I guess I'm a sucker for a good life

It is true that people in states are turbocharging their 2.5L Imprezas. The compression ratio on those is 9.7
Some people are making impressive power with good reliability, but it is still a concern. You are lucky to have a factory turbo available
I was happy to hear that Subaru are introducing the Turbo in the states. Temptation to turbocharge my 2.5 is totally gone now!

Yeah, I'm one of those "lucky DUDES in the States" running a 2.5 Impreza RS 2.5 with the Minnam Stage 2 Turbo kit.
I've had it fitted now for ~ 11000 miles and it's awesome. Mine produces ~260bhp running on 92 Octane!! Others are over 300. But my goal is STI V5 performance levels with reliability.
My only problem so far has been the MAF. I'm on my 4th The MY99 Hot film MAF's aren't up to it. THe MY98 Hot Wire MAFS definitely are, my friend with the same kit has had no problems with the MAF on his 98 RS.
One good thing with the Imp RS is we have a 4.44 final ratio, so 0 - 60 times are pretty quick. I've seen 4.2 secs with 2 people and 1/2 a tank of Gas in the car. Although I'm not sure how accurate the SFC timing is. Others are running the 1/4 mile is high 11s low 12s.

While the cost to do ti wouldn't really make sense, It is not inevitable that your engine will blow. As long as you are not expecting to run 16 psi with it you should be okay. As someone else said, there are turbo kits readily available for the 2.5 RS .Also many manufacturers make turbo kits for the high compression Hondas, so it is not really a crazy idea from a technical standpoint. Its just that it would make more sense to sell your car and buy a Turbo.

now theres an idea Miles ! I've got some Nitro Methane in my garage - from a drag car - well a radio control one anyway ! lol
Do you think it would totally bu88er the engine up ? hehehehe hey John dont get your knickers in a twist - it was a joke.
Someone said something about super chargeing. They have had a go with the mini's using these. They got an 850cc mini to go 130 mph - kinda cool huh ?
now how fast would the impreza go hmmmm 2 litres/850 cc? ? ? ? vvrrrrrrrrm psssssssst vrrrrrrm ! oh well just gonna have to get a tape recording of it for now - I am right in thinking that a dump valve has to be run on a turbo aint I ?

*cough* *cough* oh dear sorry about that but I've got a cough today and you had me in stitches John.
The main influence in my life as far as comedy goes has to be Jasper Carrot - nuff said huh ?
Ok heres a sensible tuning question (just to prove to you that I aint a thick northerner)
ok - So to what stage is the std heads on scoobie sports modified to ?
Have they got the dogs danglies or are they just std. In my Mini I have got a stg3 head fully gas flowed and buttered with marmite ! eezy John ! - dont you just love that marmite advert on the tv btw ? love it when he has to go and wash his mouth out in the bathroom !
erm oh yeah - so I gather you can mess with the Crank and what about the cam - must be easier huh ? I have the air filter and tail pipe sorted soon - what about different manifolds ? Has anyone fiddled with the ratio's in either the diff or the gearbox? or is there no replacement gear sets ?
I think all this technical gobble de goop is boring isnt it - I'll go back to my turbo virgin frenzy again me thinks

I have a 2000 impreza RS 2.5 in the USA and it has a compression ratio of 10:1 and the rear end ratio is 4.11:1 I'm not sure of the final drive ratio..
I'm serioulsy considering a turbo kit. Longevity is definatly important.
Hopefully more people with aftermarket turbos on 2.5s in the USA will post their results here, I would love to hear their pros/cons to installing it.

Seriously has anyone any experiance of running odd fuels in any road car engines?
I ask because I always used to put my old glow fuel (it goes off after about 6 - 12 months) into my mini. Always felt a bit quicker, that stuff was 75% methanol 15% castor oil and 10% nitro methane.
MMMMM loveeerrrrly smell
or what about running a big laggy turbo with a 1/2 second nirous oxide shot on full throttle? Big turbo + no lag

ok heres another wacky idea beaten out of our factory design room this morning (ten o'clocks in the bait hut !!) How about dropping the boxer style engine and gently persuade a couple of 1100 GSXR motor bike engines in ! hmmmm yum yum, This has been done apart from just one engine - into the back end of a mini, seriously tail happy
I think it was shifting out 160bhp in a ickle mini - aaaaaah - My mate needs a car that can do 180 + to help him test out his newly rebuilt motor bike - he needs to calibrate his speedo - and find out how fast he can get it to - We've worked it out sorta and we need a car to keep up with him - any offers - the above experiment will have to be done on a private road of coarse ! remember never go over 70 mph - ok folks seya soon

I think I'm coming along to Donnington with a girl I am "just friends" with. We manufacture coal effect gas fires and stoves and also Wood Burning stoves - good discounts to SIDC members - I think we are going to try and enter the race for the first men on the moon that is sponsored by Tate and Lyle - ahah - sugar powered scooobie - now theres an idea !

You're right it is a 4.11 ratio. My mistake.
I wouldn't want to touch a Supercharger though, experience of that in the States has NOT been good. 3 dead cars that I know of.
Kinda like re-mapping the ecu in your 22B.
Whoops I didn't say that
