Hi All,

I have a my 01 WRX running an ITG panel filter, I cant say I noticed much difference if any for putting the filter in. So Im now thinking of putting a proper induction kit on, maybe an HKS?

What difference is it likely to make? noise? power?

oh and can I fit it myself???

Put a K&N kit on there as I here that the later models have problems with MAF failurer with inductions kits. Do a search on here and you will see K&N are fine, HKS, Blitz have sometimes caused MAF failure. K&N I did myself....really easy !

 

IMHO induction kits a) look better under the bonnet, b) Sound 'different' (haven't decided if better yet!) and c) improve top end power slightly, lose a bit of response lower down(?) - well this was the effect on my car anyway. I think you see more benefit with a decat etc.

well from first hand experience i can tell that unless you have carried out mega mods to your car stick with the pannel filter. induction kits are good if you are going to encase them in so that your only pulling in cold air. if your just going to bolt the thing on and leave it then all your doing is pulling in hot air which as we all no is not as dense as cold. i first came up against this when i owned a "H" plate escort turbo. with the induction kit on i lost around 20bhp. it sounded good but didnt go to well. good luck in your choice, just watch for the oil going onto the maf.

Valid point. Although I'm sure someone on here did a test using temp sensors inside and outside the engine bay and there is only a difference in temperatures below 5mph or something (link anyone?). But obviously if you're sitting at the 'lights' etc. you'd get a heatsoak type effect, but this soon disappears once you get moving.
Maybe the loss off 20bhp was due to the effect on fuelling caused by more air being inducted, i.e. a remap would be required to see the benefits (if any) of the induction kit.

Looks like it does get pretty hot under there!

 

well when you think about it your intake air temp either at stand still or on the move is always going to be higher using an induction kit over the pannel filter. the warmer the air the less mass going in so your going to loose out.
i helped design the new mazda 6 fueling system and at the same time looked at air intake temp with induction and pannel. pannel worked best on this car every time even with changing the fuel map. all the head tech's at mazda backed this up when i produced the results.

 

Some argue that their FMICs are so capable that the extra temperature doesn't matter, but I think it does, which is why I have an induction kit that sits in the inner wing which seems to be the best of both worlds. However, the airflow characteristics completely screw up the airflow sensor readings requiring a remap.

 

Andy, just bunging on an induction kit will do nothing for performance and could end up blowing your engine - weak mixture, MAF failure, breathing in hot air. Seriously And an ITG panel filter is good for over 300bhp - mine is

A decat exhaust will make your car go better, but get a remap done with it. I think ECU-Tek can do this for your MY01 now. Contact Power Engineering. You'll not be disappointed

A good panel will be just as good IMHO. K+N or ITG. John F said that there is an STI paper panel filter which is netter than std so consider that as well.

I don't recall seeing any gains for just an induction kit on the RR pages or any gain over a good panel filter.

Steven Done got some gains when coupled to an uprated turbo i/l pipe but only after a remap.

I did the under bonnet temp measuring and found that above 5 mph the difference between ambient and under bonnet was about 1 -2 degs! Hardly worth breaking a sweat about.
