I found a very hard, crumbling O-ring round the neck at the bottom of the pas bottle - it's the one you top up - daily if yours is like mine was... You can only see it when the bottle is off the car.

The o ring is pretty standard, and Halfords sold me an assortment pack of them for £1. I used one on the bottle, and no more leaks (so far...)

There can be another flat o-ring thing under the bracket that holds the bottle in place. Mine did not have this, and I was told by my dealer that mine didn't require it. (Probably newer models or imports that do... I don't know exactly.)

Question

As per the subject, really - looking into changing the power steering fluid tank on my MY94 STI 1, and wondered if anybody had done it before and had some advice ?

I assume you mean the one on top of the p/s pump.

Have plenty of rag to hand, as it won't be empty when you take the old one off, and the fluid goes EVERYWHERE. When replacing the new one, make sure you have the o-ring (or o-rings on some models) in place on the bottle neck, and that it is still good. It seems to be a common cause of leaks.

Thanks dnb -

The O ring you mentioned - which one/where exactly is this ? Just want to confirm, before I take the damn thing off ! I'm assuming we're talking about the same tank, it's the one you top up. Mines leaking, and on the advice of my garage I'm getting a tank from a later model, but if it is the O ring I may need to source another one.....

Paul,

Are you just getting the tank (i.e not the pump)? If so i take it your getting the pipes as well... on the later ones it does a sort of loop around the top of the radiator. I'd be interested how this goes cos i need to chnage to the later one to faciliate the front entry mod for the TD05. (Wanna swap old for new type ).

Tony.

Be careful with the O-rings.....mine was leaking (MY94) and I replaced it with a black o-ring. Wrong type of rubber and the PAS fluid ate staright through it. Get the proper one (red in colour) and avoid the hassle I had.

Hope that's of some help.

Steve

p.s. - it's easier to drain the PAS tank first - use a large syringe or something similar.

Thanks for the info regarding the O rings. Makes sense now !

Tone Loc -
Got an offer of the pump+tank for £100, or just the tank for £50. I assume the later type tank wont match the early type pipes, from what your saying. If so, I might get the pump as well, to make sure everything matches up.

Thnaks for the reminder, it wouldn't of occured to me (until too late !) about the rubber/PAS fluid problem. I was planning on draining as much fluid as possible before removing the tank.

Thanks to all for the points, most useful ! I'm tempted to get my garage to fit the bits now, working in the cold is never fun !
