Thumbs up

In todays Electronic AutoExpress:

Zero Tolerance Plan Scrapped
Police have abandoned plans for a zero-tolerance crackdown on speeders, which would have fined drivers for going only 1mph over the limit.
The U-turn comes after a huge backlash from motorists' groups. Cops say the plan is impractical and they're looking at more 'realistic levels'. The Association of Chief Police Officers is now recommending a leeway of 2mph to allow for errors in measuring equipment, plus 10 per cent for 'goodwill'. This means motorists driving in a 70mph zone will only be booked over 79mph.

So will this replace the age old system of 10% + 3mph leeway on all motorways (ie over 80mph & you're booked)

It's always been the case that plod would allow the posted limit + 10% + 2mph. Now it appears to be official ....

An international perspective on this: In Switzerland speed cameras are set to trigger @ limit plus 3mph! Fine is about £8 per 1kmh (0.625 mph) over, on an incremental basis. Don't actually know when a ban kicks in, but one of my girlie's friends got a 3mth ban + £1,000 fine for doing abt. 75mph in a 50mph zone. Ouch!

As you can see the current UK system is actually pretty lenient!
