Question

Hi All, I am looking to get adsl, but the isp I am with (virgin net) only supplies a USB modem. Am i correct in thinking that this is not suitable to use with the soon to be released Xbox live. Could i connect the Xbox to the PC and use internet connection sharing, is there any easier way.

X-Box only has a Ethernet port, no USB.

Do you have to ahev the USB modem supplied by your ISP? There are quite a few good ehternet SB modems/routers on the market now.

You could try one of these: http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2200usb.html - it's a router with a USB controller in it. With current firmware it can drive several USB ADSL TA's, including the common green Alcatel "Stingray" (don't know what Virgin supplies). Full supported device list...

1. DrayTek dslVigor
2. Alcatel Speed Touch USB
3. DynaMite USB Modem
4. ECI USB modem
5. Fujitsu USB modem
6. Aztech DSL100U USB modem
7. Asus DSL USB modem
8. Prolink ADSL modem
9. Actiontec Home DSL modem
10. Efficient Networks Speed Stream 4060
11. Westell wire speed
12. ZyXEL Prestige 630
13. Intel PRo/DSL 3220
14. Intel PRo/DSL 3240
15. Voyage DSL USB Modem
16. GlobeSpan DSL USB Modem

Can be used to give an ethernet LAN access to ADSL internet service, so would probably work with the X-Box as well. You can redirect traffic via the firewall rules in the router, but you'll need a PC on the same network in order to do the setup.

Minor point, but the X-Box does actually have USB ports. The game controller ports are modified USB connectors. That's how keyboards and rodents can be connected when mod-chipped and running another O.S. (Linux, see http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/).

OK wild stab in the dark but how does a USB modem work? Does it just convert the connectivity, ie from RJ11 to USB? If so an RJ11 will fit into a RJ45 socket - presumably that's what you mean when you say an Ethernet port??

If it helps. I've just made it to the next round the the beta selection process for xbox live and it states that Microsoft will be sending a connection kit. Not sure what one of those is but might be some sort of adaptor.
