ITG air filters-ur opinions please?
I am thinking of buying a replacement air filter and quite a few of u seem to have ITG ones-so r they any good i have read one report that complained about the oil from it leaking into engine and causing running probs-is this a one off or would i be better going for another make of replacement air filter element?
I've got an ITG panel filter and have had no problems yet. Cleared out the air box once cause it had blue goo in but I can't see how it would get in the engine, it's soooooooooooo gooey it just drops down
Got one in mine, no probs as yet and it definitely lets the sound of the turbo and factory recirc dump valve through better than the factory filter.
You can hear the turbo whistle quite distinctly now and even the OE dump valve gives an audible pssst now (although nowhere near as loud as a VTA one).

The goo doesnt contaminate the Maff sensor as the polymer drops down into the airbox not above to where the air is being sucked.
Its only a small amount that comes off the filter which is very quick and easy to remove.

i went to the trouble of importing genuine STi panel filters for my STi5 TypeRA (MY99), i did that for a reason. *cough*
P.S I tried a standard UK spec paper filter and the engine was strangled above 6500rpm, so maybe an alternative is to use genuine STi filters, that wont strangle your engine or cover your MAF is goo.
P.P.S Love the comment about the goo always going downwards due to gravity! If you have ever seen an engine slam a barn door shut 50 yards away because it sucked the air out of the room on a bench dyno run, you will realise how daft that statement was.

Conclusion: People with a film-type MAF (MY99 onwards it seems) suffer, but those of us with older MAFs are okay.
I cannot understand what the newer models do differently, though? The amount of charge being pulled through the ITG must surely be the same, and the treacle the put onto the ITG has to be heated up to be thin enough to get through all that foam.
Could it be that on the newer models the sides of the airvox flex (or something) allowing air (and green slime and dirt) to pass around the filter from the dirty side to the clean?
