OK, so a KMH speedo is converted to MPH........I get that......

What about the odometer (mile counter thing [not sure of the name!])? Does that remain at KMs or is that too changed to miles......what happens here??

it will count up in kmh but get your self a Speedo from a UK sport or 1.8 gl these are cable driven like the jap wrx do a swap and bob is your uncle.

 

surely if the speedo is changed by slowing down the rate which the cable turns then it will count up in miles anyway?

just get the mileage "corrected" and it will show miles and count up in miles.

PS. I know nothing about technical things.
