TD04 vs. VF28
Ok, current set-up with the TD04 hits 272bhp, with usual suspect list of mods (ECUTek3 remap, full de-cat, ITG, Dawes)
I now have a VF28 to fit, but am wondering how this will "feel" over the standard blower.
What sort of gains (ie bhp, torque and where in the range) can I expect ?
Ta in advance

Excuse my stupid question here.
WTF is a VF28 - I realise its a turbo but from what car ??
Reason for asking - I have a TD05 fitted and am looking for as much additional info on turbo's suitable for 1995 Impreza.

I ran a vf24 (which is said to be about the same thing as a 28) on my euro spec MY00 a while ago, and it was a good midrange turbo.
It'll grenade around the 340 hp mark...
But I think the backpreassure at those levels of boost needed will cause it to be quite sparkly.
Say a good solid 300 hp, with a good increase in midrange torque.

Caz,
TD05 is a very underrated turbo. I'd stick with it if I were you, convert to front entry and maybe get it hybridised. I run 1.5 bar quite happily on mine, some (inc Andy F) run even more. I'm told a front entry TD05 is good for 400bhp!
Devil's,
If I were you I'd look at a hybrid like the MD304, just got one myself for a car running a TDO4 now and also kicking out 272. I'll let you know how I go on, gettin it fitted next week. you've just got to make sure you've got the fueeling to cope (e.g.uprated pump etc.)
Cheers
Rich

Fitted a VF28 to my 97 car 3 months ago and I can only say - What an improvement!
Boost comes in about 400-500 rpm later but when it does

My Link is to be remapped to 1.3 bar as the VF28 can run this all day and not comlain!
See ya!

Cheers guys
The turbo (VF28) I've just acquired has only done 9,500mls, so it's in pretty good nick to say the least.
Shall look forward to receiving a larger kick in the back !

John/Rich: where/who does a good uprated pump again ? Does Mark A do them ?

Theo if you get bored of your VF28 Mark can make it into a hybrid for you. He can also supply fuel pumps. Mine started life as a VF28 but spools up better than a VF23 (and not far off a VF28 I get 1 bar at 3000 RPM) and is rated to 1.8 bar with a stronger compressor wheel than a VF22, so should comfortably outflow one, but my internals are not up to the task.
Thx guys
Rich Wild - You refer to converting to front entry. I take it from that you are refering to the inlet from the air flow meter by removing the 90 deg bend ? My reason for asking all this is later this week I'm removing my turbo due to inlet compressor wheel damage. Having never removed any turbo before and going with what other people have told me that the turbo on my 1995 WRX is a TD05. I guess this will be stamped somewhere on the housing ?? Any other help regarding the removal of turbo would be greatly accepted.
My line of thought for later this week is the following :-
Remove intercooler and pipework
Remove induction pipework
Remove exhaust & downpipe - my system has the slip-on connections
Split cooling hoses
Split oil pipework
Lift out turbo
**** - That sounded easy. Anything to look out for ??

From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?
Anybody that wants a front conversion on a td05 then Ill offer them for a small fee to cover the cost of my welder (only after Ive done my own though...

so come on David, is this front entry a DIY job then.
I know from the DIY FMIC thread the type of guy you are that not much is impossible
What hose would you use for the induction if you modified the entry point ? What benefits are there in doing this mod ??
