I was reading another post about idle speed dropping to 200rpm when braking and then rising to normal when stationary. There was a post from Pete Croney about it could be the idle speed valve and to clean this out with carburetor cleaner. My idle speed was also droping under braking so I did as he said by raising the revs to about 2000 ish and pulling the pipe off the valve and squirting about half a can of carburetor cleaner down the inlet pipe.
The strange thing is ever since I did this I have got no hesitation between 2-3000rpm when accelerating slowly in 4th-5th! It may just be something temporary and will return but I wonder why it has gone? The only reason I can think is that the carburetor cleaner has cleaned something else internally which may have been gummed.

Sorry I havnt got a digi camera. You can locate the valve from finding the 3/4 inch metal pipe which run across the top of the engine just in front of the intercooler. On the right hand side of the pipe there is an S shaped rubber hose which is just pushed on, its about 4-5 inches long, this joins to the valve. All you do is have the engine running, raise the revs otherwise it will stall, then pull the pipe off the end that joins to the valve. Then squirt carburetor cleaner into the metal pipe coming out from the valve. You may find the engine starts to stutter so just raise the revs to clear it. I squirted the cleaner in for about a minute.
I did let the revs drop too low and it stalled. If so put the pipe back on and restart the engine. You may find you will have to crank it over a few times to get it to fire up if this happens.

If the ISC is sticking open, it can cause cyl 4 to run rich, hence the hesitant "hunting" feeling.

 

Any chance of some pics of the pipe in question?

gees Pete where were ya when we had 3 pgs running on hesitation between 2500-3000rpm on light throttle!!!

I hope the hesitation stays away. Have you had experience of this yourself?
The throttle does seem alot smoother now, less jurky when you lift off and put back on. I cant believe I have managed to sort out 2 problems out from your advice. Brilliant!!

Sti any carb cleaner will do the job im sure, your local motor factors will stock it, its also handy for cleaning throttle linkage under the bonnet...
