Changes in exhaust diameter - good or bad?

A lot of people on here just add a performance back box to std exhaust systems. They seem to be 2 1/2inch upwards, which then mate to the std centre pipes that are 2 1/4 inch.

When the gases reach the BB pipe and expand is this good for gas flow or bad? Should the pipe be the same all the way through? I know some systems that are 3 inches at the rear.

Personally, I'm not qualified enough in thermodynamics to answer that question. Hopefully, some of the mad scientists will though as I'm intrigued also.
