I need to get a Centre section fitted and thought about just using the local Kwik-fit ? any opinions.

I'd rather get friendly with a local garage you trust than those sheisters mate.
You'll end up with a new braking system, shocks.........

 

Do it yourself. Buy some ramps or trolley jack and axle stands and some spanners/socket set. 10 minute job at the most.

Then you are trusting yourself

If you give a crude area as to where you are, i am sure there are people on this bbs that would do it for you for the price of a beer and a cahnce to talk scooby.

I had a problem with the wife's Audi - I put a new front pipe on but then couldn't get the centre section gas tight.

I went to my local quickfit and asked if they could take a look.
The chap put it on the ramps, had a look, changed the clamps put on a bit of heat paste - job done.

I asked how much, he said not to worry about it, gave him some money for some beer anyway.

Not sure if I would take the scooby there (but then it has a stainless pipe so I shouldn't have to) but he could have charged me £20 or so.

At my place they were fine and the center pipe is very easy to fit so you shouldn't have a problem.

Try and see you may be surprised I know I was.

For something as straight forward as changing your centre pipe, I wouldn't hesitate in using the local tyre shops.
I've always found the guys to be eager and respectful changing bits on my car and surely it's worth a tenner in their back pocket to keep your pink things clean

I used kwik fit to put my centre section on and they completly arsed it up, in the end to it my local Subaru dealer who did it free of charge

 

Here's a little story about a "Quick" "Fitting" type of place.

My mate used to be the Asst Manager of a large car parts wholesaler who supply parts to loads of garages. He was dropping off some parts at one "Quick Fitting" place when he noticed that the branch manager was working under a 6 month old Mazda 626 knocking **** out of something with a hammer, so he went over for a chat.

The branch manager was removing the brake discs from the Mazda, but they were proving to be a bit of a stuggle, so he was knocking the rivets out of the disk carrier. Eventually the disk was free, at which point my mate pointed out that these particular disks mount from behind and that you need to free the driveshaft and remove the disk.

They now had a 6 month old car (a newly released model) sat on the ramp with one brake disk missing and a damaged driveshaft assembly. A quick call confirmed a 6 week wait for the parts. They has to pay for a hire car for 6 weeks for the poor owner

Not saying they're all like this, but it shows how mistakes get made.

I'm still smarting from the time I was having the front tyres on my Mini changed and I asked them if they did tracking. They guy said "yeah, but not on this". I nearly hit him with a tyre iron

 

I had my Downpipe changed a couple of months ago so there are only two bolts that might be a little rusty. If the manage to mess that up I'll eat my hat

 

Make sure they use the right gaskets and not paste if you are going to get them to do it.

Personally if i was not doing it myself, ring your local scoob dealer, and ask them if they could quickly change the centre pipe over for you. Confirm how long it will take, should be no longer than having a cup of coffee. If they charge, should be no more than £20, they have all the correct gaskets adn bolts should any shear etc.

 

I just read most of the post again and I think I'll take it to a dealer

Hi there. In Reply to your Question about where to go mate. Best thing is do it yourself. I work as a Tanker Driver for a well known oil company and deliver to kwik fit etc. Wouldnt touch them with a barge pole. How long have you got for me to tell you stories about the things ive seen you wouldnt believe.Cars smashed up heradlights broken and panels behind headlight bent, the guy then got a lump hammer and beat the sxxt out of it. chucked sum paint on it.(and i mean chucked ) stuck new headlight back in and when i questioned him his reply was whos to know.

do it yourself! much better! five bolts! the amount you pay you could buy yourself smoe axle stands and maybe a jack so you get something out of it! plus messy hands though!

 

or borrow big goon for the day instead of the axle stands!

edited to say axles stands and not jack!

and only if you can get a jack which will lift it high enough!

I swapped my back box myself recently.

Two bleedin hours under the car. I used axle stands with jacks - if you value your head, make sure you have a fail safe! I would have used ramps but damn tyres are too wide on the Scoob.

Nuts from the BB to the centre didn't want to move. Loads of WD40, a spanner and a hammer did the job but plenty of cursing that night.

 

Sco-saltire: I went for the Magnex centre with resenator to keep the noise down

 

Generally 2 answer yer question i trust no1 with my baby & i always wait 2 c exactly wot any1's doing 2 it, if i'm paying £48 or wotever an hour i wana c wot i'm getting 4 money
Took mine 2 Roger Clarkes recently 2 fit blitz centre & back box as they no da scoob inside & out & they're pretty damn local 2 me. Relatively easy job all in all but he did say that the bolty thingamies (aint i technical) which attach the D/P to the centre section do quite often go **** up when removing so he did check he had sum spares b4 removing. Plenty of WD40 & gentle persuasion (both back & forth when sticking) ment they did come off unscaved in the end but just fort i'd add that as sumin 2 potentially watch out 4

If you have bought the magnex centre with resonator you should have received some new bolts for the end that connects to the downpipe.

I have this on my car, and seriously only 20 minutes to do.

HKSubaru - can you tell me where there are 5 bolts for the mid section??? as the 3 i have done several times have only had 4.

 

I wouldn't trust Kwick Fit to empty my ashtray (and I don't even smoke).

 

P20SPD@Home :The centre is second hand so no bolts I'll have to use the old ones, but just having the DP fitted they are very new
