Grant, what is your car? < MY00 or MY01? Also, what engine management are you running?

tks.

EDIT: Sorry, I just re-read and realised that you're running a UNICHIP. Is this a direct replacement ECU, or a remap> tks

Just wondering if anyone has the above installed, and how many LED's do you see with WOT?

Mine's installed on the block, max sensitivity. Maybe about once in 3 weeks or so, I get a sudden 2 Greens and 1 Amber with WOT in gear 2 or 3. On the average, I give her WOT twice to three times a day. On other occasions, I usually get 1 Green only. Boost is around 1.1bar.

Similar experiences? Could this be the ECU advancing the timing to look for the det point, and then retarding again?

Edit: On most occassions, I would say that the "det" is inaudible. I won't know it's there if not for the KL.

The sensitivity will depend on the sensor, wiring, unit, and a host of other things. I believe this is why you need to calibrate 'em with det cans or they just lull you into a false sense of security...

Well, I've heard audible det now and then (pik piak!) with corresponding ambers. So no "false security". Sensitivity is set to max, and the knock sensor is mounted on the block, not manifold.

Just wondering why a standard car dets from time to time - is this the ECU actively searching for the det-point?

I suspect that the std ECU is searching for the det point.

I have the same KL set up and if you do get a propper det, it lights up like a christmas tree.

I normally get 1 green on WOT, occasionally flicking to 2 greens on a v hot day (WRX with full exhaust and std ECU).

hi guys. i have had the same kind of fault but my det was noticed on the rollers. i have had a ecutek 3 carried out to get roung the fault, which was traced to the MAF sensor showing one voltage and the ecu seeing a different one. i have still to check the wiring loom out for faults between the maf and ecu and also going to try plugging in another ecu. if i was you i would get it checked out at your scooby dealer b4 the engine goes bang.

I get 1 green, increasing to 2 at about 6000 and if you really thrash it to the redline the occasional amber.

I tend to keep my "self-limiting" rev limit to about 7250 just to stay on the safe side.

No ambers under about 7500 rpm though.

Tks guys.

One thing I have noted, is that the KL tends to light up a bit more easily if I've held her on steady throttle at mid-rpms for some time (5 - 8 seconds perhaps) prior to giving WOT.

Maybe this pre-leans the mixture somewhat? Or perhaps the ECU isn't expecting to see the sudden WOT and is slow to pull back timing? Again, boost is no more than 1.1bar, which should be on the safe side seeing that several decats have run up to 1.4bar regularly without going bang.

JoshL took a pic of my KL install in my instrument surround when he was in town. Josh, if you're reading this, plse post it? Any chance of PeteC posting his KL-setup too?

Cheers!

Petes is really cool. He's taken out all the lights and then drilled them into where the credit card holder is so all you see is the 4 lights.

My first image upload. Hope it works. This is my KL install, stuck it in the instrument surround in view directly above the center Tach (STI7). Good even in bright daylight.

Any chance of a pic of Pete's? Would love to see what it looks like.

I did DIY it. Just takes a bit of patience, a drill and a ruler. It was quite a simple job to remove the LEDs and circuit board from the KL box, but careful when pushing the LED stalks thru the instument surround. I knocked off one LED's solder and had to do a minor resoldering job.

I chose this position because I wanted it to be as visible as possible in daylight. Also it falls naturally to the eye as you look down at the rpms.

Cheers.

RT,
Put the KL in after a few mods.Only ever get two green lights if taking it above 7000rpm.
The first light comes on about once a day.
Car is de-catted ,Unichip,APS Cold Air and Dawes running at 1.35 bar.
Only ever had amber (one) when it was being mapped on the RR at PTS.
Maybee worth taking it out for a run with Delta Dash or a select monitor to monitor whats going on.
