Hi guys!

Fitted a K&N 57i induction kit to my MY99 UK Turbo and although the car pulls well I'm not getting the boost I should be due to the heat from the engine bay (car is mapped with TEK2.5, full decat). Before held 1.2 kg/cm in 5th, now only 1.15.... Was better when I went out at night as it was cooler but still not as high as with the factory airbox.

Is there a way to isolate the induction kit from the engine heat? Perhaps some box or metal placed between the intake filter and the engine? I will be removing the non used resonator and putting some ducting in from the vent at the bottom of the bumper under the indicator up to the filter in an attempt to get more cool air in but I'd also like to try and block off the heat soak coming from the engine - any ideas?

(and no - I'm not taking it off )

Wink

Dyney's done something similar IIRC - calling Dyney............

anyone - any ideas - thought I remember seeing somewhere you can get an ally or carbon fibre box to blank it off from the engine bay?????????

You get something called a cold air box...fit one of those...
You are probably not getting the high boost, 'cause the car is running lean, 'cause the induction kit flows more air than the car thinks it's getting...cooling down the air might help...

You could fit a hood to the grill above the filter, turning it into an intake. Either that or fit the cold air feed pipe throught the intercooler, into the engine bay, directing the cold air onto the filter. By isolating it you would be defeating the object, effeccively turning it back into what it was.

The benefit of the cone is the surface area draws more in than the panel / box filter.

You could always do what Mr EcuTek himself has 'Done'.

Mod Number 7 - Cool Air Intake

Been thinking of doing this myself, but not until I can correct any MAF mis-readings as a result.

Bruce - The car is mapped for the induction kit anyway so leaness isn't an issue AFAIK.......

MB - Aye - looking into that already One of the little scoops instead of the louvres is an option thus drawing in cooler air. As I said I will be fitting a cold air feed from the lower bumper (eg where the APS cold air filter would sit) and then directing it up to the new induction, also the resonator will be out the way letting more cooler air get to it.....

The idea would be to isolate the filter from the engine heat but still trying to leave the filter open - I'm sure Dyney has done it - I'm probably not explaining it the best....
A box however still wouldn't be quite the same as the stock system as there will be no resonator - cold air routed into it and the K&N has a greater intake area than the stock system so would still be doing its job..........

Sure it's not just the MAF underreading airflow and the car running leaner at low revs as a result?

I fitted a K&N cone filter to my car and boost pressure has gone up from 0.9 kg/cm2 to 1kg/cm2. It feels so much better now than with the oe filter box, just need to put a cold air pipe to the cone filter.
