While out on the Sunday morning bike run I heard some one say the Subaru engine was "originally a lightweight aircraft engine". Is this true? What is is the history of the engine?

While I am on the subject - are there any books on the history and models of the Scoob?

Mike.

Dont know what the history is, but I met an old mechanic who swore blind it is based on the old Jowett Javelin engine.

Saw an website a litle while ago , about a company that was re-engining Cessnas etc with subaru turboed flat fours, fits in the same place as the most popular aero engines are flat fours. Thats probably where the whole thing started.

My ex-girlfriends old man is an enthusiatic professional pilot, and hence when he saw the Scoob he got all excited and said (this is about 2 years ago now) that Subaru a few years ago did an engine which was a very effective aircraft engine. I can't remember the details, but it wasn't the EJ20 we have but a similiar flat four. Whenever I see him next (not likely really) I'll refresh my memory.

PS Did you know Subaru did an F1 engine as well?

Cool

IIRC the old L Series N/A engine was very popular with the Americans bored out to 1.9.Probably the best use for it cos then you wouldn't hear the hydraulic tappets rattling
