Thumbs up

After giving my car a bit of a thrash ive noticed that when i have slowed back down there is a whine coming from the gearbox (i think its the gearbox), is this normal as i have put in the recommended oil only 3000 miles ago?

Thanx in advance: XXX

Triple X,

Mine does it as well (MY00 32K miles). A drive some 70+ miles a day, most on motorways. I find that after some fast driving for a while the gearbox seems to whine a little under engine breaking. This is most noticable in second or thrid when you lift off the throttle. Touching the throttle so that the engine is now driving the car, as opposed to braking, the noise goes - lift off the throttle and noise returns.

I told the dealer at the 30K service. As this is a major service I think they said they replaced the gearbox and diffs oil and told me to report if I herd it again. Well I do and I will!

Let you know how I get on.

Steve.

Question

Cheers Steve,
It also does it if just holding revs at a slow speed in a low gear, i didnt mention it earlier but also it seems more apparent when turning which led me to believe that maybe it could be something on the power steering side but i couldnt tell exactly where the noise came from so opted for the gearbox as the whine changed with the revs, saying that though the power steering pump is fed from the cam belt (isnt it?) so still possibly to do with the power steering!? Any thoughts anyone?

Yes the powersteering can be quite noisey, similar to what you explained. It has been mentioned that it was the pump on it's way out I think.

I had a whine similar to what you describe - turned out to be the seal for the power steering pump....
