Noticed a patch of oil on the drive last night... crawled underneath and poked about but couldn't be sure where it was coming from..

Popped into the Dealers and Front Main oil seal is leaking...

going to cost me £500 including new cam belt... which may as well be replaced then too.... doh!!!

Anyone done the job themselves?

no but I would do it myself... I presume you have to..

Remove belts...

Remove covers at front..

Remove cambelt..

Remove crankshaft pulley..

Depending on seal remove it.. possibly put a small self tapping screw into it and pull it out..

get new seal, smear some oil / grease around the edge... (well I would) makes them nice and messy when you drop them in the muck.

Tap it in squarely...

Refit crank pulley..

Refit cambelt.. taking care to line up all pulleys...

Tension cambelt... never done a scoob one so look into this if your doing it..

Refit covers

Turn engine over with ratchet on the pulley (making sure ignition isnt on) hope you hear no nasty noises... assuming this is ok, carry on..

Refit all belts and tension...

Top up leaked oil..

Drive car

I could do it myself although it has to be said I don't like changing cam belts.. and the impreza one is very long and hard to change I believe... so I suspect £500 of my hard earned will be shelled out next week then, which includes £105 for a new belt, as the old one will probably be contaminated with oil and when you have to take it off it seems silly to put the old one back on.

I have two vehicles I can use, a bike and a car.. why do they only ever go wrong at the same time? So I cannot even take the Scooby off the road for a couple of weekends and ride the bike and fix the car etc..

Its 3-4 hours work at the most. This sounds a bit steep even if the cam belt is contaminated.

 

Sounds like I best ring around then..

My guess is that they are hoping that the belt isn't contaminted, at that price. In most cases, it isn't. If it is, get them to use a genuine belt. I think its worth the extra money for the peace of mind.

Far too much. Tell your dealer to wise up, and live in the real world. We have to actually work for our money, and shouldnt be subjected to ripp offs like that.

 

the front main seal is fitted in to the oil pump which just unbolts from behind the cam belt. the whole job takes about an hour an half on a bad day just over an hour when it's going good

Are you sure its not behind the central cambelt cog, the one on the front end of the crankshaft?

 

I have no idea, I can only go one what the dealer told me..

It seems to have stopped, well slowed leaking as there was no oil mark below the car this morning. I haven't crawled underneath to see.

The oil pump is covered in oil that is for sure. There is a rubber 90degree bend which was covered in oil and I hoped it was that, that was leaking but the dealer said not.

It does seem to be very low on the front of the engine that is leaking... where about is the crank seal in relation to the top and bottom of the block?

It is all booked in.. but cannot be done for just over a week which will be another about 1400miles.... doh..

Just done 200 of those miles though and the leak is actually less although I am taking it easy, no smoke from heat shield anymore and no oil running down the sump.. and yes I checked I and I haven't run out of oil.
I shall just drive it softly softly or as my mate always says "Like I am driving Miss Daisy"..... and check the oil regularly..

BTW - That price was without changing the belt yes Pete, and like you say it is worth getting a genuine one... anyone know where I can get one cheaper than £105+VAT?

The leak seems to have stoppped...

Admittedly I am driving the car softer as I know the leak is there... but it has stopped leaking....

do I

A) Panic...
B) Celebrate and spend some of the £180 on a downpipe?
