2007 Hawk STi.
Ok great, car has been fab for ages, but this morning I pulled into a service station off the A303 and the engine was idling really rough, wobbling around etc, it wasn't happy.
At that stage no CEL.
Switched it off, fired it up again and same wobbling, still no CEL.
Pulled away carefully, then after about 500 yards, it threw a CEL, which my PSI3 reads as P0011 - Camshaft Position System Performance (Bank 1)
Drove about 20 miles home carefully, man it drank some fuel!

Which side is bank 1?

Is it perhaps the AVCS actuator solenoid?
I've replaced one of these before on the drivers side, but can't remember the P code it threw last time, but last time I didn't have the rough idling, was about 5 years ago I guess :

Looking on here briefly, it sometimes seems that the sprocket may need to also be removed and cleaned. Oil only changed 2k miles ago.

 

Bank 1 is RH side (looking forward i.e UK drivers side) or Front
Bank 2 is LH side or Rear

It's insane how bad it idles from what is hopefully just a solenoid.
Some real horror stories out there about P0011

The fault has just come from nowhere, no symptoms that I noticed etc.

 

Possibly due to the cam wheel stuck/ jammed, putting timing out.

if its jammed 'open' then you will lose compression on the 2x cylinders on that side of the engine and so its the reason the idle is so bad as only one half of the engine is actually operating
could be dirt or debris jamming the solenoid just as easily as a faulty one

 

Thanks Alyn, it was me who called you earlier...I think we got cut off at the end!
Just reset the ECU with the PSI3, the CEL has gone out (I only idled it for about 10 or so seconds) but it's still very lumpy, just the same.

Next will be to remove the drivers side AVCS solenoid and check for anything caught up in that....

 

UPDATE :

Seemed the solenoid was jammed open, took a slight wiggle with a tiny screwdriver very gently and it seemed to free up.
Cleaned it out with brake cleaner, couldn't really see any debris as such, but maybe there was something in there making the piston hang up a bit.
Fired it up, no CEL and ticking over spot on.
Bit fiddly, but managed it fine.....fingers crossed for now.

After a 15 miles mixed test drive, it's pulling like a train. I so hope it's sorted....
It was very flat to start with as I'd reset the ECU only earlier and not driven it. I'm being careful / Subaru 2.5 paranoia etc.
