It was imported from Cyprus of all places. If it was a starter relay surely it would bump start? Got towed for 10 miles and tried a number of times but wouldn't start.

If none of the above could be starter relay
Check to see if power at wee terminal on starter when key is turned to crank. Check your earths from the battery to the engine and body.
Have you still the cat for I swore I had it in my watched list
Got no cats Joe, only cats are on my Impreza and your not having those.

Sounds just like mine. Got to Tesco and turning the key a relay would just buzz.
Got it started after trying all sorts and a few days later it happened again. Tried all sorts again and in the end my alarm man said it was a bad earth. He had fitted a Cobra alarms 2years before and annoyingly didn't show me what earth, but he was under the dash a while.
The item on the left is the OEM Immobiliser ECU that is activated/deactivated by the keys transponder chip.
Any starter relay, if fitted, will be in the group of relays attached to the side of the fuse box by drivers right knee.
Any security system relay will be located above and behind said fuse box with a blue 4 pin plug.

Ok brill, didn't bother checking the starter motor as said, i tried to bump start it, but wouldn't have any of it. So if it had of been the starter motor would have started with a bump start?
Now starter has been checked and there is power to the starter motor, but won't crank. Starter motor works fine when wired directly to the battery, but engine doesn't start. So sounds more and more like immobiliser related as you said Don.
Will check for that relay tomorrow, guessing will need to buy a replacement one to check if its the relay at fault.

A thread from a few years ago lad had same issue, and it looks like it was a cam sensor, or part of the problem, I've just had my cambelt done only a week ago. Wondering if that maybe the issue?
If that's the case I would not try and start until you have double checked the belt condition / timing as its potentially an issue arising from the change???
Doubt it's that, as surely the cam belt wouldn't effect the car cranking? The starter motor would surely attempt to start the car. I was just thinking the sensor might have been disturbed and then failed, due to where is located?

a simple sensor failure would not stop the car turning over - if the belt is incorrectly fitted, slipped, whatever then it may well have jammed the engine
does it rotate at all or simply not turn over with the starter??
maybe post more details explaining recent work and the circumstances that it stopped, noises, etc??
Just cut out after pulling into car park, like it stalled, and wouldn't start back up or crank.
Just acting like it would if immobiliser had kicked in. As when you turn the key, the clock on the dash goes off, which happened in last newage Impreza I had when the immobiliser kicked in, you turn the key to start and clock display disappears, then comes back one key released.
Just wondered if the sensor would stop the engine turning over.
Starter has been tested works fine from battery. Fuses all tested and fine, my OBD reader has failed, had someone else come out and use there OBD reader, but port wouldn't connect to code reader, which has happened in my last Impreza before. Just need to buy a new diagnostic tool now.

Tested starter and works fine, but as said even if there wasn't power getting to the starter, it works surely bump start? Which it won't, as if the immobiliser was preventing the car from starting.
