So a few years ago I purchased a TD04 hybrid turbo off someone with the intention of fitting with supporting mods to my 2004 WRX.
As I’m finally getting around to doing the mods soon I’m now trying to check that it is definitely a TD04 hybrid and not just a standard TD04.
I realise that it was a bit silly not to learn this before purchasing it. Can anyone tell me how I identify the difference and what side of the wheel I count the blades on etc.
Any upgrade could be 16T or 19T compressor wheel with either the original compressor housing machine to suit or a replacement matching housing.
yep, true, but it could be an extended tip one etc etc.
Measuring just the inlet would determine if it’s at least upgraded, but not necessarily the full story (eg mine has extended tips, so the exducer diameter is > std 19t wheel, even though it’s nominally a “19t wheel”).
So, in order to determine if it has an upgraded wheel, according to Don’s chart you actually only need to measure the diameter of the wheel “nose” (so to speak). Maybe just measure the inlet diameter? The wheel inducer (“nose”) will be very close to the inlet diameter, so this should let you narrow down what wheel is in there.
if you want to take the comp housing off, you need to unbolt the waste gate bracket and remove the circlip at the back (circlip pliers ideally needed). The water feed/return and oil return also has to come off, so it’s a bit more work, but will let you measure and inspect the full compress wheel.
