I was about to order a de-cat centre pipe from Falkland Perf. Centre when they told me that the MY99 UK Turbo does not have a centre cat , ie only downpipe cat, so I didnt need one.

I am grateful for their honesty, but is this true? I have since looked under the car and there is definately something there that looks like a centre cat.

Cheers

Stratman

Ring them back...

I have a UK MY99 and had the centre section with CAT removed at ScoobyMania today. Replaced it with a straight through STI 5 centre.

Once removed, you can see the honeycomb section of the CAT in the old pipe and it's much heavier than the STI replacement.

HTH,

Chris.

Agreed - it does have one. It's the one that Prodrive remove when the PPP is fitted.

Thumbs up

Falkland Performance are absolutely correct , no centre-section cat on an my 99 .Removed my section to replace with a Magnex one and although it may look like cat inside it is merely a resonator . Falkland are fairly clued on the matter.

Drive.

All standard UK Turbos have 2 cats ( down pipe and center)
Prodrive remove the center cat as part of the PPP on my99 and my00 turbos, cars with PPP before my99 still have the center cat.

RB5 , NOT a Pro Drive Further Enhanced model.
I deal in the metal market and as there is a market for catalitic converters , I know what the material looks like compared with a resonator material and it definetly is not a cat as has been confirmed with the people in Banbury.
As there are no engine mods to basic Rb5 over a turbo model I would say all 99 models are likwise.

My 1998 UK did but my 2000 RA import didnt. It has a thing that looks like a cat can but there is nothing in it (totally empty) when you look down the pipe. I have just looked at my UK 98 handbook (I managed to get two) and it has diagram and it categorically lists two cats on the exhaust diagram. Maybe someone with a 99 handbook can confirm this.

Drive...

A bit puzzled here. Suppose you are right... why do car's with just the centre "non cat" pass MOT ?

Not having a dig, just wondering.

Import STi's ect dont have the center cat,UK cars alough they are fitted with the center cat as standard will/should pass an MOT with the center cat removed.
If they wouldnt pass the MOT Prodrive wouldnt have removed it as part of their PPP.
Makes you wonder why the center cat was there in the first place.
To be honest I realy dont know if the RB5 had a center cat as standard, as its basicly an my99 you would think so but may be not ???

Stratman,
MY99 & MY00 have a honeycomb construction within the forward section of the centre section.
This I believe is a catalyst, although I have not carried out chemical anlaysis of the material.

On the NON CATALYSED Subaru mid section from an STi5/P1 this same outwardly similiar box on the mid section has a straight through perforated tube(resonator).

On a Magnex decat mid section with resonator, the box also has a staright through perf tube (resonator).

I know because I have owned all the examples I mention here.

I find it strange to think that Subaru would manufacture a RESTRICTIVE honeycomb construction in lieu of a perforated steel tube resonator assembly.
It would, IF more restrictive, reduce performance, and cost considerably more to manufacture.

Question? Why do Prodrive remove a 'non catalysed mid section' to replace it with another Subaru non cat mid section, with a perf tube resonator?

Answer: To increase performance.

Cheers MTR

After decating the d/p on my my00 PPP car (I ordered PPP and fitted myself) I had 2 choices of centre section. With one I passed an emissions check and with the other I didn't. Guess which was which?

This is the centre section from a UK-spec MY00:

This is what you see if you shine a torch into that cat-shaped bulge, and peer in:

If it's not a cat, I'd love to know what it is

My import centre section does not look like that at all. I have an empty box about half way down he pipe and no where near that size can where that cat is.

My Euro spec MY00's center cat, sitting in the garage, looks exactly like the one in the pic.

Chers,

MY99 UK? WRX? STI? Euro-spec UK?

Mine came off this afternoon. Mike from Scoobymania saw it as well. We spent five minutes comparing the STI straight through to the cated one
