Default Occasional no fifth?

Driving spirited on Sunday and developed an intermittent problem.

Had no fifth at whatever revs. No crunching just wouldn't select this gear. All others are fine.

Short while later and the gear is back. Happened a couple of times.

No other noises and drives fine / selects fine if its going too. Drove home 120 miles without issue but want to track down the issue.

Any thoughts?

Car is 2003 spec c so DCCD-A 6 speed box.

Have you checked your gwarbox oil level to start with?
Does it do this hot/cold or both?

Maybe the nut on the shaft in the gearbox has come loose.

This.

Also drop the oil out of the gearbox to see if there's any "bits" stuck to the drain plug.

Gearbox oil is fresh and level correct.
I read about the nut coming loose....has anyone got anymore information on this as Im struggling to find anything.

Its such the wrong time of year for getting under cars and doing this rubbish.

OK so I primed myself for a cold morning under the car but have been pleasantly surprised. I pulled the gear stick cover thing off and there sat in the cup of the ball joint was a large headed self tapper. when pushing the gear stick to fifth position the gearstick was crushing the head of the screw stopping it going into position. Winner.
